I have a discussion with my nursing student, way back, about hand washing. I told them to discussed within the class if Handwashing can be considered a skills or its just innate within the person that we really know how to wash our hands. All of us know how to wash our hands.. but not all of us know how to do the PROPER hand washing. What do yuo think??

hi screwdriver when I wo rked in the hospital as a nurses aide we were taught to take several minute to soap your h and and then scrub thoroughly and rinse and dry. I think it is more of an art, not just inate. Just a quick wash is not proper handwashing and in a hospital proper hand washing is a must. All doctors and nurses should also wash their hands before going from one patient to another. there is no logic in spreading say Norfolk virus from one patient to that mom in maternity who is nursing her first baby.I did wash my hands between patients and was especially careful when wo rking in neonatal and maternity.

I work at a Hospice and we wash our hands all the time. We have a song to which we sing and that's how long the hand washing supposed to last. "Happy Birthday to you" is the song otherwise we were taught to wash our hands between 15 and 20 seconds..

Hand washing is something that is taught. Any parent or school teacher knows this. it is something that might appear innate because it is learned at such a young age. I really feel that it is learned because children see adults wash their hands so much. Properly washing your hands is a process. A process that can be taught correctly or incorrectly.
