Hello Friends, Whats your take on women and polictics ? Should more women join polictics ? Can they bring about good changes and positive results ? As we have seen a few extremely successful women in politics like Indira Gandhi, Sonia gandhi, Hilary clinton, this feild has always been neglected by women, If a women can manage and maintain her house beautifully, Isn't it possible that she can manage and maintain her country more beautifully ? What do you think friends ?

In Britain we have had many very successful women politicians from all political backgrounds. Obviously the most famous British woman politician is Margaret Thatcher, who won three general elections and was Prime Minister for over a decade. Another very impressive woman politician was Barbera Castle, a socialist who fought for the rights of old people long after she retired from political office.

@ moeyspinner: All UK prime ministers are the leaders of their political parties. It's pretty much a given in a parliamentary system where governments stand and fall with the success of the party.

Oh, and Misiufraggle, I'd like to add Shirley Williams to your list. There are also several young women rising up in UKk politics, but I'll wait until later in their careers to give judgement on whether they count as Greats.

Women are just as capable in the field of politics as they are in any other field. As you have indicated in your discussion, women have already made valuable contributions in this area and will continue to do so in the future.

Yeah Spalladino, women "are" sure capable for polictics and will keep making valuable contributions in this area. But do you think more women should jump into active polictics now ?

In a word, 'yes'. Absolutely, we shouldl actively work to encourage more women into politics and remove barriers to this happening. In particular a big barrier we must break down is the misogynistic views held by, in my opinion, far too many people.
