Camera tricks that make you nauseous

I'm watching Maid of Honor - you know with Patrick Dempsey and the actress from the Roswell series. And there is this one scene where the camera is spinning slowly around the table and I couldn't look it made me so nauseous. Things like this or flashing lights in movies - like dance scenes with disco lights or sometimes the flashing lights used for effect - can literally give me a migraine. Nausea and pain. Does this ever happen to any of you? I'm really curious. What kind of scenes do this for you. You know I remember seeing Interview with a Vampire when it came out years ago and one of the guys I went with actually left and got sick and had to wait outside for us. The blood and such was just too much I guess.

I can't stand that shaky camera thing they do sometimes. I went to see District 9 with my husband and had to dash to the washroom to upchuck. I went back in and just held his hand and closed my eyes for the rest of the movie. Also, I watched an old movie that overused the Vaseline on the lens too much too.

Thanks Trace - I will avoid seeing District 9. What effect does Vaseline have?

It makes the scene all fuzzy. The movie I saw it on was supposed to make it look cold as the movie was set outside in the snow.

I can see how this could be difficult to watch as well.

I love "Interview with the Vampire" But I know what you mean, there's a certain thing where they zoom in and then out... dizzying

I love that movie too. I was already along with Anne Rice to not like it because of Tom Cruise. Yethe did an excellent job. Even she liked it, according to interview.

@artemis432 Ah Tom Cruise did do very well at the part of Lestat - though, who was it supposed to be initially? Val Kilmer I think? He'd have been nice, too

I can get used to some camera stuff but when its all over the place I don't just get sick I loose focus, on the movie plot. I've seen the movie you are talking about and it does have that scene that could make people sick. There are a few movies that I don't watch because when the camera is all over the scene I can't follow it anymore. I've never had a problem with shaky cameras but I can see how some people might feel sick while watching.

Maybe it is those prone to migraines not sure. I guess I lose focus too - but partly because I have to loook away or close my eyes

I don't like camera where it's in a first person view like in the Blair Witch Project (though I really love the movie). I get dizzy with all the running, juggling and spinning around, although it's also a good technique to make the viewer's guess what will happen next.

Is that kind of bothers me too. Both physically and just slightly annoying. Although it's good for making it seem realistic.

Showing shootings, blood and guts (Tarantino style)... does not make me nauseous. It is weird camera things that make me dizzy. Flashing lights make my eyes hurt. And long periods of handheld camera shots make me dizzy. I liked the concept of Cloverfield a lot, but the unsteady camera made me dizzy, especially when seeing it on the big screen.

Sounds like me - can watch zombie munch on someone's head - no nausea but get the crazy flashing lights or camera angles and all of a sudden i've got a major nauseous headache! I haven't seen cloverfield but wanted to - not after reading this though!
