What are your pet peeves about the way the inside of cars are built?

Mine is that there is no place to put my purse. For years I've written auto manufacturers, sending them ideas and suggestions and there is nothing done. When I'm alone, which is most of the time, I can put my purse on the passenger seat but when I have a passenger it has to go on the floor and things spill out or it gets dirty and stepped on. This could all be solved by a little (retractable) clip on the driver's door or the glove compartment. Or a cubbyhole in the dash or something. Even if my purse is on the passenger seat, one quick emergency stop sends it crashing onto the floor. That, and having all the controls on the steering column. I prefer my headlight controls to be on the floor. What would you modify if you could design the interior of a car?

well, one is that the cup holders are so shallow, my big drinks fall right over if not held in place. however, your idea for something to hold purses, well, I carry tote bags and I sure would like a safe place for them!

Plus, if you have a cup with a wide bottom it won't fit in most cup holders! Cars now are meant purely for driving, not for eating on the run or enjoying a cup of coffee or a cold drink. They should make them a little more human-friendly!

probably why the Germans think cup holders are frivolous, cars are for driving not eating...

thats a great idea. you know my little toyota did have a compartment right between the seats like a little box you open to store your cd's etc. i used to put it there or just put my cigs and cell phone there and put mt purse in a compartment on back of the passenger seat. i really miss that little car. but dont drive any more

I have a little box between the seats but since I'm short I have the seat up close enough to the wheel that I have to reach back to access the box. That's dangerous when the car is in motion. I like my purse within easy reach. I don't know why, since I never answer the phone or make calls when I'm driving. Also, if I'm stopped for some reason I don't want a cop to see me reach into the box--that would put him on red alert in case I was reaching for something deadly. I prefer to get out my license while I'm stopping then sit with both hands on the wheel until he comes to the door!

Actually, my SUV has a retractable hook beside the glove compartment to hang whatever from it. It holds a purse quite nicely. I don't normally have any passengers, so my purse sits on the passenger seat most of the time but if I do have a passenger, it goes on that hook. Normally, I keep a small plastic bag on the hook to put trash in. I really can't think of anything I'd want changed about my SUV. The design is very user-friendly. My husband's truck has some controls right on the steering wheel but I'm perfectly content to have mine on the dashboard.

Wow, that's exactly what I would like to have!! If I could glue a hook to my dashboard, I would. But with temp changes and all, I'm afraid it wouldn't last long. I carry a purse with a long strap--I hate those tiny little straps that place your purse under your arm when you carry it on your shoulder!!--so it would have to be something like those sunglasses clips that clamp over the strap. I like riding alone, don't you? We can sing, cuss, whatever and nobody cares! My Toyota will have to do me till I quit driving but if for some reason it doesn't, I'll buy something like yours, just to have somewhere for my purse!

In cheap cars it's hard to find a good seat that you can sit in for hours at a time.

Oh, don't I know it!! When I moved from the Southwest to the Midwest I spent 3 days in my car and by the end of the day, even with frequent stops, my back was killing me! Remember those comfortable old bench seats? I loved those!

Cars can be so beautiful from the outside. Then you get inside the car and your view is different. first of all, a lot of cars aare not built for comort. They dont give you the leg room that you need. Nothing seems to be designed to make driving easier for you. There are just more complications to consider.

You might be old enough to remember the roomy, comfortable cars of the 20's through 60's--I miss those! But being short, I don't need much room. My two sons are both over 6' and have long legs, though, and when they visit me they are so cramped in my little Toyota!
