Do you know any computer programming languages?

I have some knowledge in Java and Visual Basic. Given some of the things that can be done out there, I am by no means an expert, but I know the basics. Have you ever tried to learn a programming language? Looking forward to reading your responses.

I dabble in a lot of different programming languages, but have yet to master a single one though. It is the story of my life: Jack of all trades, but king of none! I love working with html and Java the best. P.S. I like your avatar's coffee mug! (I'm also an evil genius! okay, not really. More of a nice genius. okay, not really. More of a nice smart guy. But I'm trying! I watch a lot of Family Guy's Stewie and Pinky & the Brain for learning purposes.)

Yeah that tends to be a common story. We know something of most things but not everything in anything. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I did a lot of self study in computer programming. I started out with Basic during college. Then after college , i studied C language on my own again. My infatuation with the language continued for a while but because i was not practicing this , i had forgotten how to program in C. Next came Visual basic. But again since i did not practiced it i have forgotten how to use it. Why cant i practise them well because i am into Marketing and Sales..

Yeah, there are times where part of what I learn, its forgotten. It is not something that I really think of practicing that much, unless it needs to be done. Just don't have the time. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

HTML is one of the first languages that I think I learned but it must have slipped my mind. Of course, it was mostly self taught, because I made my own website when I was about twelve. Not a good website, but still, the attempt was there. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I am a BCA holder our syllabus cover lot of programing languages like COBOL,Fox pro,VB,Java etc but now I am working networking field now I almost forgot about computer languages. Generally a Language mean a medium to communication, without a language communication is very difficult.Computer languages are used to convey user instructions to the computer.Computer can understand only one language that is Machine Language it's the combination of binary (0's and 1's).Computer languages broadly classified in to two types Low Level Languages(Machine Language and Assembly Language) and High Level Language(General Purpose and Special Purpose).

Wow, you seem to have a pretty good grounding. There is so much to learn out there, that you can spend your entire life and still not master every single language. Still, there is a lot to learn and a lot of little quirks to them, that I doubt even the most seasoned programmers have picked up. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Yes, I know. I'm working as a programmer in fact. I'm currently using Visual FoxPro for development, but there on my work we all are wanting to migrate to a more powerful environment, Fox is just too old, outdated, buggy and useless. All this combined with SQL Server, which I'm used too and I like it. I also know a much of Visual Basic, which I learned on my own, studied C on first years of university, basic PHP and HTML, and some assembler.

An interesting story, the only one out of those that I did not at least study slightly was C but I did come close. Back in High School, there was a programming class offered on that language, but apparently, not enough people took it the year I was going to take it, so I was shut out and could not take the class. Thank you for your response. It is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

I've learned Turbo Pascal, TurboC and ForTran during college. Befor eI graduated I also took an extra subject for Java. During my free time I learned to use the Game Maker Language by Mark Overmars to program games. Right now I work as a programmer and I added another programming language on my list which are PHP and JavaScript. Right now it is not hard to study and use other programming languages since they just differ in syntax. You will just consider their differences of course.

I learnt Java and C++ for my diploma but my skill wasn't that excellent to be proud of. HTML and Php were learnt during my practical training as the company required us to make a web based system. But since I didn't practice much, I forgot half of them by now, save for the HTML.

Once you learn how to learn a programming language, and you understand that all code gets translated into machine code, learning a new language just takes couple of tutorials with increasing difficulty and practice, practice, practice. I am not an expert but have dealt with quite a few languages ranging from Assembler to JavaScript. The only exception to this rule were languages like Scheme, HTML, Haskel, there are some languages with a very weird syntax, but anything can mastered with enough practice :))
