Acrophobia - Afraid of heights

Who's afraid of heights? Do you know that the most scariest job is the work where you climb the very tall cable tower and fix something up there? Climbing up without a harness... You only stop when you get tired. If lightning strikes you, you have no fast way to go down. Do you want to risk your life for your job? I am afraid to cross a bridge. I envy those people who crosses the bridge walking in the sides while buses and jeepneys pass their way. wheew... My legs just shake and i feel my mind would just burst. I feel like I'm being sucked under. Are you afraid of heights? Then can you share something about it?

I am not really afraid of heights to an extent, however, I saw a video online the other day that showed someone climbing one of those towers you are talking about, and I would never do that. Climbing things doesn't bother me at normal heights, but that type of thing is a risk I am not willing to take.

Oh you saw that? I was talking about that. It is so scary to be a cable tower worker and all those other jobs cleaning outside tall buildings, etc. How about standing at the edge of a cliff or a tall building? Would that scare you or would you develop such symptoms when you are on that situation?

I am generally not afraid as long as my feet are on solid ground, however, don't expect to see me attempting to climb Mt. Everest or anything like that any time soon. LOL

hehe. Yeah, I will not expect that. That is only for experts! I wouldn't even try that. It is just because it is so tiring to do it and I don't have the proper gear to go mountain climbing.lol Thank you for your participation on this discussion. I really appreciate your replies. =p

Hiya KTG, Sometimes I can be afraid of heights usually just looking at something on the Television will get me half way to that horrible feeling. I know what you are suffering. Usually there is another problem behind it and it masks itself as this phobia. So don´t feel bad about it. What causes it can be anything really any silly thing that you might not realize it. If it affects you too much I would seek help. Don´t be afraid to seek help about it as you can cure it and lots of People have this kind of problem they don´t like to admit. You have much courage to say it so you are half way to curing whatever caused it. Once I lived in a high rise block of Flats and one morning I looked out of the front Window and saw a Guy walking on top of the Roofs on the other side of the Street like he was walking along the pavement of a ordinary Street really casual. He made me feel sick just to look at him I was afraid for him and feeling "dizzy" at the same time but he gave me a big smile and waved hello. I had to laugh and I forgot my "fear". I could see he was okay just doing repairs on the Roof. Maybe you could get someone to go with you crossing a Bridge or whatever you could start by doing small things like going up a higher slope than usual and take time to look down from there and see how you feel do this over and over until the feeling that you get subsides. If it does not subside don´t worry about it get help from someone compassionate and who will listen to you. Someone who will have time for you and not think that it´s silly. Because it is not silly. This how I get over this feeling as well. I don´t always have it so I guess it just comes and goes. But I would not take on that kind of Job either as I think without a safety harness it´s ludicrous to risk your life in such a way. Surely in this Day and age they could use a "Robot" of some sort to do these kind of things. Without a safety harness I would not indeed even want to contemplate doing such a Job.

hello lovinangelsinstead21! Well, looking at people doing that in television and out there in the streets would also bother me. I will feel something shivering in my bones and maybe I will have goosebumps. Thanks for the advice on getting help. =p Phobia I think is treated by "desensitization" in psychology. It is exposing yourself or the person to the object or situation that he/she fears (every now and then, at slow frequent intervals). Heights bothers me, but it doesn't interfere much on my function in life. I crossed 3 bridges in my life and faced that fear! One railroad bridge was actually very steep, made of old wood and if you don't know the time the train will pass - you can't go anywhere when you are in the middle! I walked right through it but I was holdin' on to some friends with my mind trying to burst out from my head!haha This is the picture I am talking about - http://www.picable.com/Transportation/Trains/Acrophobia.1595518 Would you go for this???

Hiya KTG, No I would not go for that one but if needs be I would cross legs shaking the lot but I would get to the other side. Good to see it does not interfere with your life then neither does mine but I have to control the anxiety and that´s it as heights are my pet hate. I admire those People like the man on the Roof just walking around so casually. I did look at the Photo and I can see why you got so anxious anyone would be too.

I went and crossed that bridge because I have company and I have someone to hold on to. But if I am only alone, then I could not do it. Maybe if no one helps me that time, I would be stuck in the middle and get a panic attack which could make it the more dangerous.

When I was young I was fine with heights the only time I got nervous was on very very tall things when it was time to climb back town. Such as being 6 and climbing onto a roof. Going up and getting on the roof and playing wasent scary it was the trying to get down and not fall part that was scary. Once I got into my teens I truly got a fear of heights. I can stand 6 feet off the ground and feel dizzy with fear of falling. I cant go near edges like of bridges or railings because I feel like the railing will fall off and I will fall over the edge. I got the chills just now thinking about it.

Most children are not afraid of heights especially when they are playing. That is why many of them get fractures from falls. I don't like to go near edges too. Good thing you mentioned this. Tnx!

I wouldn't say that i was exactly afraid of heights. They can make me a little tense and nervous and anxious at times. Sometimes just the thought is enough to bring these emotions on.

I think I am too. I am not afraid of height but I am just tense or anxious about some high unsecured places. Maybe there is another name of a phobia on fear of crossing bridges... bridgophobia.lol

I am scared of really tall heights but in a way it's fun to scare yourself and get a thrill out of it. I don't know why people are scared, it's not like we're actually going to fall. Fun though.

It could be fun sometimes! I love the thrill. It's not like but it feels like. I mean, it's all in the mind! Our mind controls our body. Our mind is makin' all that symptoms you have when you are afraid!

I'm quite all right with heights. As long as i have somethin to hold on to, i'm not afraid of any heights. If u are asking me to sit on the ledge on the 2 storey of any building, i will naturally be scared. This is something that surprised my bf because i told him i'm scared of roller coaster, but i enjoy standing on a very high bridge, overlooking the nice scenery below us.

I would definitely be sacred to sit on a ledge of a 2-storey building. Or to sit on a ledge on a bridge or just standing up near it. But I think, I can take the roller coaster. I haven't tried one but I love to try it. haha

I'm not really afraid of height per se but I have a sense of vertigo when I'm at a high place and looking down. Once I went to Hong Kong and they've got this place where they have miniatures of famous buildings around the world. The centerpiece was the Eiffel Tower; not the actual size building but one which is a few levels high. I went up with my husband and my legs were shaking not just because of the height but because the structure seemed so precarious to me. I quickly went down after the second level. I'm such a scatty cat.

Wow. new symptom here - vertigo. I haven't experience that. I am also afraid of high buildings aside from bridges. But maybe, I won't be so afraid if the building loooks really secured, like a thick veranda wall/ or what do you call that. Thank you for sharing your experience to this discussion. I really appreciate it.

I am afraid of heights but not that much that i can't even cross a bridge. Ya, it's scary to do to stand on tall structures and work, it freaks out everybody, But they don't have any choice, some or other person have to do it. Its the courage and the amount of money make them to do the thing. The simple rule for the people who are afraid of heights is that "DONT LOOK DOWN"

Thanks for the simple rule jackjill. I heard of that of course... but still I am afraid to cross a bridge. I think my mind goes ahead of me and i think things that make me more scared. I even did not try the confidence course because I am afraid to do it even with a harness. But I would like to try it sometime.
