I saw something unusual on a menu today and decided to try it. At the Highland Park Pharmacy, I decided to try an orange phosphate soda. It was interesting, but I don't know what the heck I just drank. While trying to find out what a phosphate soda is, I found an interesting article linking the rise of soda fountains and prohibition: http://www.drugstoremuseum.com/sections/level_info2.php?level_id=47

As a kid I use to like soda fountains, but then came bottled Coke and the fountains disappeared. I don't think any of our local pharmacies have a soda fountain...maybe it's an old idea ready to revive itself...along with drive-in theatres?

Citric acid is used instead now, although some sodas always called for citric acid instead of phosphate. Phosphates are linked to osteoporosis and they haven't been added to sodas for probably about 50 years. Lemon or Orange Phosphate with ammonia, now there's a soda! I wonder if anyone on this board has had an ammonia coke?

Are you talking about those extra sweet sodas that they give you when they are testing you for diabetes? I had one of those when was pregnant because they suspected I had gestational diabets. It made me so sick you would not believe. I was so pregnant, and I had a baby in my car and I could not even make it home or to a gas station, it was one of the most horifying experiences of my life. I am sure that does not happen to everyone but my pregnant body just had a horrible response from it.

I used to drink them all the time at this little corner shop in downtown Kansas City years ago. Honestly, I never even though about the ingredients or how they were made! lol. They were just sooooooooooo good! So, I looked it up and this is what I found: http://www.homemade-dessert-recipes.com/soda-recipes.html Pretty cool and seemingly easy to make. Might just give it a try here at home!
