Why do you think you deserve a salary increase?

An excerpt from one of my Hubpages, "In a first world country, for example, people would always think that they should be asking for a raise particularly for the reason that they deserve it more than the reason that they are underpaid. In a third world country,... a worker or an employee demands a raise, it is influenced by the thinking that he is underpaid or his work and efforts are not compensated fairly enough. I believe that the reasons why people think that their salaries should be increased are divided only in two main reasons of “I deserve it!” or “I am underpaid.” There maybe other reasons but classifying them will definitely make them fall into one of these categories." If you desire for a salary increase, why would you be given?

I think I deserve it.. Because all I wanted was a simple part-time job while I'm in school, and they gave me almost 40 hours last week. They have me working almost everyday! One time they made me work 11 days in a row, I have no time to do homework or anything. I work more than their full-time employees. So they owe me big time.

Hi, for3verfamous, you really have to ask your money. But I think that you have also to be proud of yourself - it seems that you do a good job and that's why they need you more and more.

Hi bingskee! Everyone wants a salary increase. I believe that a salary increase could only be supported by the fact that the company is doing well financially because of increased revenue after a certain period of time. Everyone deserves a raise then. But how much should everyone be getting. Is it 100% across the board or should it be dependant on the input of each based on the company's guidelines of measuring an employee's productivity or quality assurance. What happens then if the company is continually facing losses? Is a pay cut for everybody better or a paycut for a few so that the others can retain the same pay? Or both, a pay cut and a retrenchment and who has to go? I hope I have not off tracked because that's how I see with regards to paycheck.

you had enumerated valid points, tomitomi. i am actually sleepy now but your response perked me up. a lot of companies will claim that they are losing though at times it is evident it is not true. but in cases where a company is indeed losing, that is understandable. i think an employee should do a research first before embarking into the decision of asking for a raise.

Whatever demands we would make would only be futile. Ultimately the onus is on the company to give a pay hike if they are making money. It is the company's moral responsibility to see into the welfare and wellbeing of it's employees. Eventually a pay hike is also in the interest of the company.

I'm thinking a good reason for a raise would be if I found a way for a company to do something more efficiently and therefore the company would see years of profit for it. That would be a fair reason for a raise!

Yes, that's what I mean, if I invented or perfected a way to do something critical that would save them lots of money over a long period of time, I would deserve a raise!

The workers demand for higher pay with a reason to increase their purchasing power. They all know that living in this economy world, we need more money for better life. At the same time, they might found out the truth that their Boss, who in charge of the enterprise, is earning million every year, they will try to request for salary increment.

if i am the owner of a company, i will consider giving a raise to deserving people, especially if the company is earning more than as expected.

Outside of your two reasons I would have to say that due to rise in cost of living. Everything today is rising except in my opinion the salaries, so in order for any human being to continue to arrive at work in a balanced mental state we must also rise with the comfort of way of today. I am not saying a person needs to get a way over the board exorbitant amount, I am simply saying every individual in order to survive and continue to be a law bidding tax paying citizen must be able to afford cost of living. So therefore, alongside my speech I would include that as well as you the boss deserves the best of the best in your business so why can't we feasibly understand that I should have periodic raises.

Managing on a constant salary for a large period is somehow difficult. Commodities prices are rising day by day. Increasing number of expenditures are creating problems for the household budget. A resonable amount of salary should be increased annually so that you contain the intrests of your employees solely to your organisation..

i agree it is but right to ask but it should be reasonable, too.

My union has an agreement with my employer about how much the salary increase I'll get a year. My manager then decides how much I get. The size depends on what I perform at my working place.

increase - salary added
Hello Bingskee, It depends on the situation, if the work is hard and the salary is low then probably the employee can asked for a raise. but if that worker isn't doing much then why bother anyways. i believe we are in a state of financial crisis. therefore, the person should learn how to save money instead. Probably this is only applicable also for those who have children or married with kids. I know i will asked for it if it's really necessary. otherwise, look for a better job

this situation is applicable for every employee or worker. an employee can ask for a raise if he thinks he deserve it. but this should happen only given ideal situations where the company is doing good. i will ask for if it is necessary like if work and responsibility are added to you more frequently than receiving a raise, or if i think the organization has benefited a lot from my contributions, or the cost of living expenses are adding up.

Well, being that I am a stay at home mother, there is no way that I can ask for an increase in my salary. However, my husband has had many occasions where he has gone to the people that he works for and asked for a raise for a variety of reasons. The main reason that he feels that he needs an increase in his hourly pay is because of the fact that he has more and more responsibility placed upon him. That said, he deserves the money and he is underpaid all at the same time.

hello bingskee! i work for the government here in the Philippines and i would say that salaries are not that great. confronted with such question therefore, i would say i should be given a salary increase because i deserve it, for the kind of work i do. Faced with financial constraints and political influences with underground transactions resulting to lesser people to do the job, we are force to multi-task as in really multi-tasking, a feat which cannot be done just by anyone. This is specially true when the work involves vast knowledge on communication, laws and government policies, information technology and tourism promotion..rolled into one. i do the work that is supposed to be done by at least three people, yet i receive only the salary of one. if there will be a salary increase, it is but understandable if i would say that i should be given since i deserve it.

it is understandable, deriellevc. but speaking of government agencies here, i wonder if salary increases are easy to get.

Hi, Bingskee, it seems that your reasoning puts me in the Third world :D Because I think first of all that I'm underpaid for years. And most people think that the governments don't have the right social policy etc. At the same time though I could say that the work I do and my skills deserve a better compensation. So maybe you can't put people in those two categories only.

Thinking about the two categories that you stated, I think I definitely need an increase in my salary because I am underpaid and I deserve an increase. That would be because of the quantity of work that has been given to me by my employer and I am not compensated with the additional tasks that are not on my job description. I think it is just and fair if i am given an increase.

sometimes workload is not equivalent to the pay we are receiving. it is always the management's reason that it is better for one to be paid little than not being paid. but we have to assert ourselves and say, 'enough'.
