What is with the squirrels?

Yesterday, we did a fall urn arrangement at a client's home. Planted ornamental cabbage, mums, and other flowers. Put in some gourds and dried corn. Well, the client absolutely loved it, said the arrangements looked beautiful, that is, until the squirrels got at the corn! She had to remove the corn from the arrangements. Remember, it was dried corn, not edible anymore. That's what I don't understand. I thought squirrels liked things that were fresh, not dry to the point that they're not edible. Is it in their nature to eat things like this? I wonder, as well does my boss, why they wouldn't have gone after the cabbage as well, unless they knew it wasn't good for them. It's annoying because we worked so hard on those arrangements only to have them damaged due to the squirrels.

Seems like they'll eat anything, just like raccoons. Crazy honestly.

Hey I am sure you made a lovely arrangement that even squirrels get interested. LOL I am not familiar actually with squirrels for we don't have it them in our country. Have a nice day Kris.

Squirrels eat dried corn. Stores even sell bags of dried corn for them. It retains its nutrition and their sharp teeth can penetrate the shell of it. I would use artificial corn, I guess, if I wanted to discourage the squirrels from tearing up the arrangements. Many animals like dried corn, and the birds do as well. Think of a squirrel as a tree rat, as that is basically what they are. They are rodents and will eat whatever other rodents eat. Rabbits, raccoons, opossums and mice will also ruin those arrangements for you.

I don't know what is up with the Squirrels! They can be very frustrating at times though. I had a palm tree plant out on our deck this summer. I had it sitting up high , thinking the squirrels wouldn't get to it (plus we live on the 2nd floor of an apartment building!) and they still found a way up here and dug it all up. SO ANNOYING! I don't know how to stop them though. I'm sure there is something you can put out to keep them away.
