A firewall is like what other person say is a software or hardware or even a combination of both. Its main function is to stop unauthorized access to your comment to the outside world and what i mean by that is to computers on a network as well as on the internet. By doing this it prevent people from remotely taking control of your computer. Example without a firewall its possible for other to steal your files as well as your keyboard information like what you type, password, account, paypal everything. So it is very necessary. They can not only steal files but they can put files on it too. Files such as viruses, trojan horses, worms etc which will corrupt your computer system and then cause it to crash which i doubt you would want.

I would say absolutely! It is reccommended that you have a firewall in order to keep your computer safe. I pretty sure that a firewall is hardware and software. I would also reccommend that you have a good Antivirus program. (such as Norton Antivirus, AVG, McAfee, etc...) Like people always used to say; when in doubt (meaning when your computer isn't safe), then get an antivirus. I take it that you have no idea what an Antivirus program is. Also, you need an extremely strong firewall in order to block most malicious software from taking over. Have a nice day.
