I got into car accident, my employers are acting weird.

I got into a car accident a few days ago, I have been off work for 3 days now due to bad headaches. I called in the minute it happened, and told them I will be taking 2-3 days off to rest because I was getting migraines after the crash. Today, I finally go back, my manager brings me into his office and tells me "Don't worry, this is not a write up, just please sign it without giving me any trouble, it is procedure / protocol", I asked him why are you doing this? I was in a accident, I had bad headaches, I couldn't show up for work..it's a high sales pressure environment that I work in. The manager replies to me "You are suppose to call in everyday, even if we know the reason you are missing and how long you are missing for!" Does that statement make any sense to you guys? I told them i would be off for 2-3 days, and I came back on my 3rd day...so technically was off for 2, and they still wrote me up. Would you actually call in everyday and say the same reason again? Sounds insane to me.

If it was company policy to do so, then yes, I would ring them up every day to tell them I would not be in for work. I am not sure where you live, but a vast majority of employers here in the UK require a doctors certificate for you to be off work due to illness. I have been an employer so I can understand it from your bosses perspective.

The thing is, this was never asked of me, nor did they say it was a policy. I was shocked with the way they were treating me, I am a top sales man for the company, so I am quite disappointed to be honest. All they should have done was give me a warning or tell me that next time, I need to do this, I've been with the company for 2 years now.

This company has a bad policy, you should talk to someone else about this, because it sounds a little weird to me.

The only thing that you'd have a peeve would be IF whomever you spoke with on day one didn't remind you to keep calling in everyday you are unable to work. But you know it's these write-up's that they say don't mean anything they use them when they want you OUT. I hope you are feeling better. Have you seen a Dr yet? That may help your case as well.

the reason for calling in is more on to check if you are ok and if there are any complications the company needs to know about this will also prevent errant employees to say they'd be sick for a long time and yet are out on vacation well not really prevent, but it sure does make it hard to enjoy a "vacation" when you have to call in everyday huh? your company cares enough about your health but please don't expect them to call on you everyday to check. be proactive and do it. it's just a call anyway

I know it sounds really silly but I have had to do this as well, I had the flu once, proper flu, like when you havent got the energy to get out of bed, I went into work with it at the start of my illness but then it got too much, they knew I was ill as they had seen me work while I was ill, but I still had to call in everyday while I was off work. Even though I could tell I would be off for a few days I still had to call them everyday. And then had to do a return to work interview when I went back. Its not your bosses trying to make you feel like a bad employee, although it sometimes feels that way, they have these rules there for a reason. This way they stay in touch with you and you can update them on your progress, whether you are improving or getting worse and when you will be back. Not surprising when people have to call in everyday they usually go back to work quicker, its a lot easier to make one call and say you will be off for 5 days than it is to call everyday for 5 days. Your bosses know that you are genuine, unfortunately they have to follow procedure.

Some policies are there for a reason. It might have been possible that someone had abused the trust previously and now the policies are in place because of it. To be on the save side, always follow protocol.

If it was company policy and I didn't want to loose my job. I would call in every day. I would feel ridiculous but I would do it.

Silly as it sounds,if that's what's set down in your contract with your employers, that's how they expect you to play it when something happens to You.Here in the UK,You can be off 3 days before needing a note from your Doctor by way of explanation for your absence..Maybe that "Check in Daily" thing is just their way of seeing how things are progressing for You..Though What was with the Manager saying "This isn't a write up" when You say that's what it was?

woah, I can't believe it...well, I can. I had a car accident in june and spent nearly a month with aches on a shoulder (I hitted it with the steering wheel, but nothing went wrong), company tried me to go to work despite I couldn drive or use arm for all that time. They were more drastic, they fired me aducing it was in legal period to do that without reason (just for 1 day, after 2 months!!!). Yes, in that kind of environments pressure is terrible, but I can't understand that you have to call and say you're still recovering from the accident...c'mon you're not at elementary!!! That's insane for sure. Hope you're better now, but check your back, cervicals suffer a lot (when mine, they told me, ok, now it doesn't hurt you but, let's look if it hurts you in days or weeks). Try to relax your neck and shoulders, that will help if you suspect a headache is coming, neck and shoulder muscles tend to be stressed and produces those headaches. And don't worry, they are kids behaving like that, and that means you're the best on your work and don't want to tell how much they need you ;)

Well, perhaps they do not believe at all. Some people are really like that. They become dubious of other people's claims. They might be thinking that it is just an alibi. They are probably wanting to check on you.

The company i work with also require all employees to call in sick daily, so i guess this is common practice everywhere. The memo is served to remind you of that kind of policy and like all memos, you are given the chance to explain your side before a decision is made. It would probably be placed in your file but it it's not that often then you won't lose you job. Good sales people are hard to come by so chances are the company will not do something drastic about your case especially if you have documents to show, it's just that there are company policies that need enforcement in fairness to all concerned.

Man have you read the Employee's Manual on your first day of work? There are things written there were you my find simple but you might forgotten them in some incidence. Employers can be mean and you should be aware of that. They can look for any possible reason to blame you since as you had said you work on sales. I bet you are a Sales Representative. I was also in Sales, and I know how the employers get upset in cases you don't hit your quota. Even you have a valid alibi.

I will tell my employer how many days i need to be off, but my employer think that it's no need to call in everyday.

I think you're boss has a deeper reason for doing that. Because come to think of it, you came from an accident and resting, so why should you call everyday even if you are in sales? It doesn't make sense. Got to know your boss' elaborated reason for that. ;-)
