A smile, but no service

In the bank the other day I was greeted by a manager as I walked in. "Good morning, sir!" she chirped. Had they been expecting me? Another manager called out to me from his office. "How we doing today, sir?" I didn't know about him, but I was feeling queasy. There was one teller for the five people, including me, in line. After 15 minutes I got to the counter and made my simple deposit. On the way out I was serenaded by the same woman. "Have a nice day, sir!" she sang. I snapped, momentarily. "Listen," I told her. "I guess you're concerned about customer service. Why not add some employees to actually service your customers? Maybe you could even man one of the windows. I don't want chirpy greetings and lollipops. I'd like to get in and out as quickly as possible, and I'd prefer not to have a pleasant conversation with strangers." Think I was out of line?

You did the right thing. After all you are trusting them with your money - a customer is always right. :). A customer is the best person to help an agency improve its service.

Don't know about that. I used to deal with the public daily and learned how wrong the customer can be. I thought about writing a book called The Customer is Always Wright, picturing the worst customer ever, Mr. Wright, who combined all the worst qualities I'd ever encountered.
