Money is the root of all evil

It is common saying that "moneyis the root of evil". According to the Random House Dictionary of Proverbs and Sayings, the phrase first appeared in English circa 1000AD. The saying originated in the New Testament. "For the love money is the root of all evil." Timothy 6:10. I Think it would be a much more accurate statement to say that the root of most evil is man's desire for status, or jealousy over losing in the status game to others. Money is just oney way of keeping score. Blaming money for evil is like blaming the scoreboard for the baseball game. Share some opnions? Have a good day to all

The lack of money is the root of all evil. Seriously, i don't think money is the root of all evil. People have misquoted the New Testament. It is the LOVE FOR MONEY that causes people to do evil things. Man's tendency to be evil is the root of all evil.

HAHAHA! I had a good laugh on your response dear friend. Don't omit the words "LOVE FOR" because it is the fact of it.

As for me, there is nothing to contest about the verse in the Bible because our lord Jesus Christ is the one who actually taught this to his epistles. We are not being taught to turn away from money because we need money to support for our financial needs and especially in doing good (Ecclesiastes 7:12)“For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.” What is prohibited in the Bible is the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10-11). Money on it's own is not evil, in fact, epistles used money in propagation of the gospel (2 Corinthians 9:12-13) "For the administration of service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgiving unto God;While by the experiment of his ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men…"

I would like to point out to you that an 'epistle' means a letter. Jesus taught his 'Apostles' (which were his followers) and they wrote 'epistles' which are letters. I thought you might want that cleared up since it kind of changes the whole meaning of your post.

I tend to concur with you that the root of all evils is man's desire for status, jealousy and so on. It is because of these desires and attachment that makes money the root of all evils because attaining these wants need money! How does one gets the status one has? Money! It is simply everything need money to make more money that ends up money is the root of all evils.

I agree with you, it's not the money, money is just a part of it. So many people do evil things in this world that have nothing to do with money. They walk all over the people around them to feel good about themselves, but they don't receive any money for their actions, they just do it because they are bad people. I think that when a person reads the Bible they need to understand that it was written in a different time period than now. At that time people were more obsessed with what money could do for them and they did everything for money. Fast forward and yes people still do bad things for money, but some people have evolved to just do bad things for the sake of being bad.

I think it's been well summarised here that it is the wont for money that is the issue. In reality, I believe that it would be more accurate to say that the wont for material goods is the root of all evil. Without money (in our society at present) it would be impossible to have those possessions. Money (or trade by bartering) is merely to tool with which to obtain them.

It is understood from the New Testament "For the love of money is the root of all evil". And so money is not the root of all evil. It is the people who loves money became the root of all evil when they acquire it through stealing, and killing someone for the sake of having money. Money is happiness when you acquire it through working hard and doing good without the expense of harming anyone just to earn money..

The Bible says it is the "love of money", not just the money that is the root of all evil. When a person loves money, they are also expressing a greed for whatever status or purpose that money can accomplish for them, just as you said. If I had a whole room full of money, but the money could do me no good, then I doubt I would love it.

It's the "love of money" not just money.. For the love of money is the root of all evil. Money is neutral, it is man who decides what to do with it and the motive of his heart. It's not blaming the money, it is how man prioritizes and gives more importance to it and that is the main reason why there is also corruption.

I don't believe tnat money is the root of evil because the Bible says that "the love of money" is the root of all evil. Money is a gift from GOD and a means of GOD's provision to us. There's nothing wrong with money but it is our attitude towards it that creates the problem. It is a source by which men can buy their needs. When we began to covet and greed began to rule our heart that's the time that money becomes evil.

Well its true, money is indeed the root of all evil. This happens in all corners of the world. Peope steal, kill and do bad things because of money. They say money keeps the world go round. But i think its the greed that is the root of all evil. And thats my opinion.

I think what it means in the Bible is God would like to remind us to stay away from money as it is considered to be an evil to him. He thinks that we will do crime because of money. I agree with you that money is not the only factor that leads us to sin, there are other factors like lust, jealousy as what you have said. Basically, all kinds of temptations. If we follow God's will and do what he tells us,then we will not fall into these temptations and will not sin.

The word "love money" is evil itself because it is being greedy on money and it is not good. For money is needed to use, pay, barter in desiring, wanting something or anything. So without money we could not get what we want.

It's the desire for possessions. Material objects cost money. Keeping up with the "Jones" It certainly has a hand in human greed.

Money is the root of all trading and the enemy of barter trade. Can't agree much with the Random house of Dictionary.

I do believed that money is the root of evil not the root of all evils. Because this phrase is not being specific when the bible quoted as saying. Man's desire to do evil deeds is not set on that particularly. Men doing evil acts because of sin

It really depends on how you gonna use that money for your own or to others. People might use money to do evil things, while others would use money to do charity and helping others who is in need. So, it depends entirely on how you gonna use that money.

For me if you do not let yourself be drawn to money then it is just fine. People will do bad things just to have the money they want. Greed will trigger them to do that. It still all boils down money. All we have to do is just spend it wisely. If it just passes our hands then let it be.
