White buffalo are American bison (American buffalo) that are considered to be sacred signs in several Native American religions, and thus have great spiritual importance in those religious ceremonies. Buffalo are normally brown in color; white buffalo can result from one of several physical conditions: They may be leucistic, with white fur but blue eyes, instead of the pink seen in albinos. They may have a rare genetic condition which causes a buffalo to be born white, but to become brown within a year or two as it matures. They may be albinos in which case they will remain unpigmented throughout their lives, and may also have hearing and vision problems. They may be beefalo, a bison-cattle crossbreed, and thus have inheriteted the white coloration from their cattle ancestry. White buffalo are extremely rare: The National Bison Association has estimated that they only occur in approximately one out of every 10 million births.

I know everything you said about the White Buffalo. Years ago I didn't believe there was a white buffalo and it was a Native American just seeing things after smoking a peace pipe! I was so weird as a kid! As I got older I learned and read about the White Buffalo! It is amazing and I hope someday I able to see a White Buffalo! I know they are rare but it would be totally amazing to witness!

I did know that the white buffalo is very sacred to the Sioux Indians as I was born and raised in South Dakota and did meet a few of the Sioux from the reservation a few miles from Rapid City South Dakota. In fact KOTA our radio station was run mostly by Sioux Indians. their motto the best darned station in the whole Sioux Nation. But the other facts I did not know and I have yet again learned something new on mylot today. thanks for the information.

No, I feel bad that I don't know the importance of such an animal. It seems like a big one that must have endured lots of pain due to aggravating weather conditions. The white buffalo seems so special sticking out of the crowd, and it would be great if I could ride one. I know water buffalo are pretty much heavy, and not even albinos can reach their full weight. Out of many millions of births, such an Albino really is worth photographing and seeing.
