One of my relative is living in japan. They tell that japan is frequently affected by earthquakes . It also seems to be true that from the media we are aware that japan is most frequently affected next to indonesia. What is the reason for frequent earthquakes to occur in these countries?

Japan, Indonesia, California, are all on the edges of a tectonic plate. Japan and California (and Alaska, Peru, New Zealand, etc) are part of the "Ring of Fire" that is part of the Pacific (how poorly named an ocean). California is where the North American Continental plate is over riding the Pacific plate. Japan is where the Pacific plate is under riding part of both the North American plate (northern Japan) and the Filipino plate (southern Japan) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Plates_tect2_en.svg

Japan and Indonesia are on a region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is a region in the basin of the Pacific that is frequented by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Ring of Fire is a direct result of plate tectonics and the movement and collision of the crustal plates. And it is unfortunate for Japan and Indonesia to be placed at the edge of the so called crustal plate or tectonic plates.

Hi, this seems to be a geographic question. Since I've just learnt about it :P I can tell you something about it. Actually, japan and Indonesia got an earthquake is a normal activity, because Indonesia is located near the place, where the plate of the earth is moving. This is caused by the vulcanic activity inside the earth. The hit of two plates caused earthquake. Hope this information helps, have a nice day
