Is this saying true about the economy.....

"When construction of new houses goes, it means that all is well". I remember hearing this all the time before, if construction is going strong, it means the economy is strong.
I live in a small town surrounded by lovely mountains, lots and lots of green spaces, apple orchards, farmlands and water at about 45 mins from the big city. Lately it seems that more and more of the green spaces are being taken over by new house projects. Im afraid there wont be any forests or farmlands left pretty soon. Ive never seen such a boom in construction of new houses in a while and they say its not about to stop anytime soon.
At the same time, prices are going up for just about everything from food to utilities. Many are losing their jobs or cant find other jobs. They say that they have so many people on their lists for food banks that they dont know if they'll be able to help everybody.
So does it mean that the saying is not true anymore? So if construction is going strong, it doesnt necessarily mean that the economy is healthy.
What do you think, is the saying still true or a thing of the past now?

Hello! These houses aren't being built for people that want second homes are they? If that's the case that will prize out the locals and have a detrimental effect on the economy. This is something that goes on over here and it really makes my blood boil as these "second homes" are used during the holiday season in summer and that's it..left empty the rest of the year. I hope that isn't happening where you are.

Hello!
No they're not second homes. We do have cottages way out in the country at about 2 hrs from the city but those are very expensive to buy now as more and more people want to own property in that area. We call it "up north" but its not really way up north. The right name for that region for those cottages is the "Laurentians".
No the houses they are building now are homes where people live in all the time. So it means they have to go through traffic every morning and evening to get to and from work.
Not far from me, they have houses that are worth anywhere between $800,000 and over a millon. Not little shacks I must say so its good for anyone in the area if they want to sell their houses as it jacks up the price of all the others homes also.
Im not happy only because it might make my municipal taxes go up in 5 yrs since my house is now evaluated at $900,000. and we bought it at $125,000 10 yrs ago.....quite a good profit wouldnt you say if we were to sell, but then you have to turn around and buy another which will be the same price, so we're staying here for now.
Im sorry they're building second homes in your area and it sounds like its not a good thing.
I remember watching a show (the name escapes me now) it was made in the UK and 2 real estate agents were looking for homes for couples. So many were buying a home in the country and an apartment in the city. Some were buying homes in the city and the country. So it seems its something thats being done in the UK. We dont really do this here. I wish I could remember the name of that show lol.

That sounds like "Location, Location, Location" to me. Not my favourite programme (apart from yummy Phil Spencer) as they only seem to concentrate on London and areas not far from "the Big Smoke" so people can commute. or base themselves in a London "pad" during the week.
I used to like the programme but not anymore as it encourages people to sell, when really they should stay put. If they don't like London they should move away PERMANENTLY and find a job elsewhere but they won't because of the bigger salaries there. In other words, they want their cake and to eat it. Whenever they go on about house prices it's always based on London and that annoys me too. Houses in Carlisle are priced £20,000 higher than in my hometown of Blackpool (which "Location" would never visit in a million years) and with Blackpool you definitely get more for your money. Speculators have ruined Carlisle and Cumbria in general, all because of the Lake District and the fact people want to visit..er, once a year!

Yessss thats the show!!
I have to admit that I couldnt understand why people wanted a flat in London and buy a house somewhere else. Cant they commute to London and live outside the city? Im sorry to say that Im not familiar with what it looks like in the UK. I see "travel" shows but its not like being there.
We do have people who live in our big cities here permanently and they dont have houses anywhere else. Those who live outside the cities, well they put up with sitting in traffic for 2 hrs morning and night!!
Why dont you try to contact "Location" maybe if someone in your area was at the show it would help your area??
Yeah he's not bad looking is he? lol

Hi Bubbles! My husband is in construction and he has been feeling the impact of the economy. Houses are still being built through the U.S. (I can't speak for other countries), however, at a much slower rate. My husband works through several contractors down here in Chattanooga, and the building has slowed down a lot. There are still some contractors building away, but these are the ones that have so much money, I hardly think the economy has been an issue for them. However, when I saw all those people shopping away on Black Friday, I wonder if a lot of people have been impacted by the economy like our family. There were so many people buying big ticket items, you wouldn't think there was a problem with the economy at all!

Hi Bubbles!! I am hoping things will get better soon, however with construction, this is always the bad time of the year with all the holidays. No one wants there house tore up...which I understand. I do taxes, so at least I will be back working soon, even though it is only for a few months...something is better than nothing. Have a great night. Gerri

HI,
Oh geez, taxes already???
You're right now is usually not a good time for construction with the holidays but Im sure it'll pick up in the new year. Tell your hubby that now is the time for him to take care of the house and the cooking. I hope this wont put your life in any danger LOLOL
Thanks!

Hi GD,
Ive been wondering about the same as I watched this on the news, all the people going crazy to buy expensive stuff on BF. It looked like some arent having issues with the economy at all.
Well I wouldnt have had the means to go shopping no matter if the price was right.
I sure hope your husband will start working full time from now on at full rate!!
Thanks!

First off, let me say that I'm no economist. I really have no idea how things work but I have heard that notion too...the economy must be strong if there is construction going on.
But we also know that many people are losing their homes so there is certainly no shortage of homes available but there is a shortage of cash and jobs. I'm afraid it makes no sense to me.
What a shame you are losing your idyllic lifestyle out there.

Well if my lifestyle is about to be gone, I'll think of moving somewhere else in a few years.
I dont think that many are losing their homes here but I saw an add on tv for repo houses in the US. I wouldnt feel comfy buying a house that was repo......Id hate to profit from someone's loss.....but thats me.
Im no economist either. I just hope that things get better soon.
Thank you!!

overall from what i know construction is still to terrible when it comes to the economy. 1/3 of all houses be purchase are foreclosed homes so that for sure will bring down the level of new homes being built. to your question i would have to say yes if there is a boom of housing construction then i would say the economy is getting stronger. that went backwards when the economy started doing terrible. people couldn't afford to pay for house mortgages-homes were foreclosed-banks lost money from not getting housing payment-then the bailouts.

I sure hope its true then that the economy is on its way back to normal. Not many lost their houses here, only a few foreclosures. Our banking system doesnt work the same as in the USA. We all thank God for that.
Hope it all gets better for you down there!!
Thank you!

Hey, I never heard about this, but I guess that is a right phrase and it sounds pretty reasonable too. If the construction goes wrong, it also meant our economy wasn't strong enough. Just like recent recession, our recession start with construction business going busted, and all businesses starts to slumped. If the construction revive, it might mean that our economy will going well soon!

Sure sounds like it might be true, at least in my part of the world.

I think that even if there are a lot of construction going on it doesn't mean that the economy is booming. In my place there are a lot of houses being built but if I consider the number of people without any proper homes here in my country there are still a lot of demand and so little supply. Even if my countries economy isn't doing well a home is still one of the most important basic need.

I feel the same, a house is very important.
Here also the demand is not meeting the supply, hence why they're building everywhere now.
Here too we have many without a house or even a place to live but I heard on the news that they're planning on building apartments for them. They say that some people living off the street DONT want to live in an apartment, that they prefer to live out on the street!!!
Thanks and I hope the economy will soon pick up for everybody.

I think you have to look at the real estate market and the sale of existing homes as well. When these new homes are being built, what are they doing with their old homes, how are they financing the new ones? That will determine what the economy is doing. I know that we have two or three housing additions going up on the outskirts of town, and a lot of existing homes are for sale, we have a lower unemployment rate than some places, but there are still people hurting, and things like gas and groceries go up all the time.

Same here, we still have some people hurting and they're saying that theres a demand for homes now. Apparently they're a lack of houses on the market for sale and thats why the prices are so high now.
We did have a house for sale on my street but the real estate agent put up the sign on the Monday and took it down the next day as the house was already sold.
What I dont really like is that they're using farmlands to build those new houses or mountains. We have beautiful mountains here and most have apple orchards on top. They sold the orchards and are now building houses there. They're also cutting down whole forests to make place for new developments. I think thats not right to destroy such beautiful lands.
Thanks for sharing!
