I can help you out with this one.Black friday is basically a marketingploy. It is the day after Thanksgiving, the first official shopping day of the Christmas season. Many stores, especially big retail stores, open early, sometimes atmidnight and offer insanely huge discounts on a lot of items. It is usaly a mob scene at places like Walmart, Target,Best Buy etc. People will often camp out the night before at these stores to get in and get the deals before they are sold out.

Well it is a good ploy. In India during the festival times, the merchants do not give any discounts, the reason being the customers are anyhow going to buy the clothes and sweets. Of course some electronic goods will be sold with freebies. I have never seen people camping out in front of any shop in India, even when they offer fabalous discounts. Of course once the day starts, there is a lot of crowd particularly in the weekend.

I too haven't seen any crowds campaigning in front of any shops due to over crowding.. There are always more retail shops available in plenty to shop out. We can experience crowd statistics in a higher rate during weekends, but surely not a campaigning structure !!

Black Friday is the day that the retail merchants expect to sell sufficient merchandise to start turning a profit. Thus, they expect to go from red ink to black ink.

Yes, that is a good explanation. Most of the merchants will be able to laugh all the way to the bank, and looking at all the discussions, I think western people splurge on anything when a discount is given, just like the film The confessions of a shopaholic

I too have the same kinda question, after reading the first two responses, i have understood the terms. Is this being throughout the country or throughout the western countries? I have many more questions to put forth..
