When the slave trade was booming. Why do you think Europeans, Americans, thought that Africans should be enslaved? What do you think is the idea behind it? Do you somehow think that they thought Africans were like horses, you buy it and make it useful in the farm? I'm wondering how it started. Any ideas?

I have no idea but thinking about that period in time makes my skin crawl. Humans aren't supposed to be slaves no matter what their race is. Talk about racism.

It is harsh but I have no idea to how they might have come up with the idea.

I think that it started from the idea that some people felt they was stronger than other ones.

hi gorillafootprints I have wondered why any human would want to make slaves out of other humans but I think it boils down to money and selfishness and meanheartedness. I cringe when I read the history of one of my gr gr gr gr grandparents who was a slave owner. But I guess in that time frame there were a lot of others who had money and looked at the Africans as beasts of burden not as men deserving of respect. I am an American but the thought of any human being a slave sickens my soul as I was taught as a child to respect all people and not to look down on anyone.

Slavery has been in practice for thousands of years, from the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks,Romans, the Mayas,Incas, Aztecs and in almost every ancient civilization all over the world. As far as the slave trade is concerned poorer countries were invaded by the Europeans, the British and Americans and the poor people of the countries were captured and taken to their countries and made to work on their farms and factories. They were given a pittance or sometimes not paid at all.they were abused ,beaten and treated cruelly and even tortured.Sometimes they were treated well and given decent clothers, food and made a part of the family of their masters. It is always the strong and mighty who rule and the weak and helpless who serve.Slavery has been abolished now in the modern world but still exists in small pockets albeit in a different form.As long as there is inequality there will always be slavery in some form or the other.

Slavery has been an issue all through history not just with that moment in history. Just about all cultures at some point have gone through a period where they believed there were a superior race of humans, and enslaved a race they deemed less superior. Slavery is still in effect. Even though it is considered illegal in most of the world there are places that still practice the slave trade.

So how do you think it all started? Any ideas? Any random analogy? Theories?
