social networks

Social networking is a recent phenomenon which has its good points. Unfortunately, there are its minus side, too. Recently in our school, reports were received that photos and videos taken of faculty inside the classroom were taken and uploaded in social networking sites with negative and derogatory comments. This is truly sad. Something good is being turned around and giving it a bad repute. On the other hand, it could be a wake up call for techers to reflect on their teaching and for students to be more responsible and discrete in their social networking as this could destroy reputations of innocent people. What do you think?

students, and educators, as well, need to be literate. there are certain types of literacy that need to be acquired especially in this ever growing technology. one of the most important things to be learned is judgment. it is with judgment that students and teachers will be able to determine what needs to be shared in social networks. lack of discretion can surely jeopardize an institution, and innocent individuals, too.

I agree with you, bingskee. One should use discretion in social networks, especially of the public nature of these sites. Destroying the image of a member of your community destroys the image of the whole community, and therefore the culprit who is also a member of the community. I hope they see it this way. Thanks for your response.

Hi figurativeme! The onus is on us as users of the network to be responsible. Like many other things or inventions created for good purposes, they are always open to abuses and have always been abused, nevertheless.

You hit it right, tomitomi. The onus is indeed on users. Technology is neutral, it is people who make it otherwise. Thanks for your response.

hi figurativeme oh thats awful to take pictures and videos of their teachers. What on God;s green earth is in their minds' as this is abusing social networks and bordering on criminal to me.Sure sometimes students get teachers who are not the greatest in the world but that happens at times to the best of us. That does not give students the right to take photos ' abnd videos and use them to spite a teacher. Is there no stopping point to what people on a social network can try to get a way with? I am so glad that mylot has some good rules about flaming and insults as some social networks do not. I was in a Diabetes group with no moderator and some of us were told that we had sinned and diabetes was our punishement by God by this weird so called Doctor. He also called a nmber of us and told us he had asked God to curse us all.He was a really werif man whom it was said that he actually did not have the credentials of a cardiac surgeon as he had claimed to be. there was no moderator so people could say all sorts of things. There was no body to stop them at all.

I think social networking sites are great for communicating with people far away. But, like you said, every great inventions have a downside. Technically, we're the ones responsible on what we put there unless facebook creates some kind of agreement on obscene stuff being uploaded.

Hi frontvisions. True, one great advantage we get from social networking is communications. It would be a great day if users use it responsible even without the policies that would ban obscene stuff. Sigh! Tanks for your response.

Yes, syoti, there are always two sides to everything. How nice it would be if both sides are good. Is this wishful thinking? Thanks for your response.

Yes you are right, all the things has two side one is good and one is bad we have to see that we are on which side. social networking sites are very good for people who wants to make new friends or some one whose family member and relatives live outside their city or country. But it is very disrespectful for your teacher by your classmate in the event which you are mentioning. I think mobile phone should be banned in your class this is the solution for such thing.

You are right in saying about disrespect. The school bans mobile phones and other gadgets but students have their ways of using it unobtrusively. Cowardly too, if I may say. There must be a way of making students understand of the ill effects of what they do on social networking sites, particularly where it hurts others. I wonder if they are aware of this? Thanks for your response.

Social networking is basically just real life on the internet, the kids in the class are not going to post anything online about their teacher that they are not saying in real life. Most of the time reputations with not be destroyed because people know that kids are just being kids even if that involves being a little malicious. The good point is that, if you say something about a teacher in real life then you can get out of it quite easily with the whole "he said ... she said" thing that goes on in schools. However posting something on a social network requires you to have an account, therefore it is easier for teachers to identify the guilty party behind the rumours.
