I couldn't believe it until I went and looked for myself: there are hundreds of books for free offered on Google as e-books. They are totally downloadable (they appear in just a minute) and are transferrable to whatever device (Kindle? Mobile Phone?) that you might read on. I'm starting out with "Walden" by Thoreau, I'll segue to "Grimm's Fairytales", and then after that I'll try the "OZ" books by Baum - all three or four that are listed. There's something for everyone there: "Man in The Iron Mask", most of the Sherlock Holmes stories and a couple of the novels, light-hearted stories like "Tom Sawyer", and darker stuff like "War and Peace". There is also a section on hot topics, like "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and multiple stories centering around the fairytale (and the actual fairy tale, too) of the "Black Swan". Check out household repair books, electronics magazines, and more! Here is the webpage: http://books.google.com/ What will you read for free? Or download for someone as a gift?

Are you sure it's the full book? Because I know they will give you quite a few pages, but I'm not sure it's the whole thing.

It's not the full book, at least with regards to some of the books I have checked out. They give only those pages allowed to be put up by publishers or author. But it's helpful as there are quite a number of pages being put up.

Huh! I'm reading "Walden", and it's the full book, for sure. There is an offering for download of the entire book. Perhaps that's only the case with the "Classics books", and not the "popular" ones. Do let me know which books you've checked, so we can let other know which ones won't fully download. Thanks, Headhunter525!

AH! Pardon. Only books that are "PUBLIC DOMAIN" are in full. That means that the copyright wore out and now they are free for the reading online. Many classics are. Sorry about the popular titles...you might have to research to see which are public domain and which are not - I found this info on the very...last...page of "Walden". lol

Thanks for sharing the site! I am collecting ebooks. I just started a month ago. My brother is usually the one who downloads them for me. I have an ebook manager installed on my laptop. It's called calibre. Personally, i still love real books that i can hold and flip and sometimes sniff the pages. hahahah. But ebooks are nice too coz they don't take up real space and they dont' cost you anything. anyways, thanks again!

Yep, that's why I like them too! No space, it's there when you want it, etc., etc. Anytime I find gold like this I'll post it!

I think those are the books already in public domain. If books are still copyrighted, I think the most we can download is just ten percent of the content. I read a few books from Project Gutenberg. However, I find it taxing on the eyes to read online.
