Black bananas? Oh my!

I love bananas! I do eat alot of them and we usually have bunches of them in the kitchen. THey go black so fast it is seems a real waste of money to get more than one. They go bad so fast. Do any of you have those hanging racks and if so do the bananas seem to last any longer? Having them hang instead of laying on a surface. I am thinking of investing in one and i wonder if it would be of any help. Your thoughts, experiences.

We got there whenever my mother bought bananas that is easily to get ripe. My mother love bananas and I keep on telling her that she should eat it right away so it will not get ripe and black.

I am just going to wait until they are in season. I can't find any green ones and they get ripe and turn black way too soon.

I think banana's are always on season. The green ones are the large bananas, it's quite hard to find one cause most are selling the yellow ones.

i dont think it helps a bit. ours still go black really fast these days. im thinking even the bannana companies are having problems keeping up with the economy and are therefore pushing the older ones longer. i usually make bannana bread out of them. you can do a search and get a good recipe for that. easiest way to make do these days.

I usually buy them as green as possible but this time of year that is difficult. I just wondered if the hangers worked.

hi celtic eagle I used to buy traderjoes green ones for 5 cents as they were firm and no black spots also less sweet for us diabetics they were perfect as they did not rise our blood sugar and yet tasted really good as they were sweet enough to be delicious as far as I was concerned. I have never seen a hanging rack for bananas. I just buy them with some green on them and they are not so huge and you can get a lot for five cents a piece. they ripen more slowly then the very yellow ones and they have no bruised spot om them and are really very good to eat.

I am just not able to find very green ones this time of year so they ripen very quicly. Guess I will wait until they are in season again.

Hi. celticeagle. I don't have a hanging rack that my bananas can hang on. But I have seen this in a magazine/catalog though. I have thought about getting one for my kitchen, but I never bought one. I don't like when my bananas will go bad and get so black. It makes me mad. I don't like to buy them too green either, because it takes the so long to ripen! I opt for yellow bananas because they are more fresher. I also love them cold too.

I actually like their flavor when they are alittle green. If I buy them too yellow they don't last.

I have not used it myself but I saw most people do the same and use the hanging racks at the market to keep the banana last longer. I think you could try and get one of it if it is not too expensive. I don't know if there is any other method to keep the banana fresh a little bit longer. Good luck and have a nice day

I have found that it helps a little. I think that what really helps is buying a few bananas that aren't really ripe and hanging them up, but if you buy to ripe of bananas the hanging really doesn't help. I even invested in those green bags that's suppose to keep fruit fresher longer and that was a complete waste of money so stay away from those. They have the plastic hanger that is really cheap less than $5. Good Luck! Happy Holidays!

I always get them as green as I can. Lately I haven't had that option as much. THey must be ripening quickly in the store and not getting as much of a turn over this time of year. But the hanging does help retard spoilage alittle, huh?

It does a little especially for the ones that would be sitting on a surface. Not sure where bananas are coming from right now, but certain places produce just never seems to be as fresh as others.

I have used the banana hangers and they do seem to help a bit. Not a lot though. Me and the girls like them so they don't last long around here. My youngest likes to make smoothies with them and that is a good two or three. Depending on if she makes it for herself or all of us..lol.

I usually buy them very green and they would last for awhile. This time of your I don't find as many green ones and they rarely last long at all. I guess I will do without until Spring.

CE- I've not found any real good solution for making bananas last longer. However, when they go brown/black I make banana bread. The more ripe they are the sweeter the bread so that's the best thing to do with them. You can freeze them when they turn brown/black and then make bread at your leisure. Namaste-Anora

I'm not sure that would help at all. I like bananas too, I try to use them up as quickly as possible.

Bananas overripe and oxidize very quickly store them any way you want. The best bet would be to buy half ripe bananas. Then you have at least 2 to3 days to eat and enjoy. Overripe banana is not bad for eating. It is very good for colon cleansing and is also used for detoxification in the local systems of medicine, here in India.
