Ugly people need a job too

I Don't want to call anybody ugly first of all..... but what I mean is that people that are not perfect and beautiful with perfect teeth and a perfect body need to work too. Lots of places only hire good looking people, I don't think that's right. Only because I'm missing some teeth or I'm overweight doesn't mean I can't cook a Burger or sell you some Jeans at the mall. If you have a not so pretty waiter or waitress do you get turned of when it comes to order food? Some people are just like that and it makes me mad. Do you care what a person looks like or what kind of person he or she is?

I know what you mean except in reverse actually, I have been hired to many places solely based on my looks, I am a bartender/waitress/cook. Employers believe that if their staff looks good their business will boom, I hate this case of profiling because a lot of employers also expect you to be stupid if you are attractive and will attempt to take advantage of that. I disagree with the profiling, it is prejudice, and everybody deserves a shot if they qualify for that particular job.

I agree with you to a point. I don't necessarily care as much what the person looks like physically as I do how their attitude is and how well they can perform their job, especially with customer service related jobs. However, if the person does not appear clean (I don't mean that they have to have short hair or perfect teeth or anything but just basic hygiene type clean), then I do not want them handling my food, and I suspect that many other people would feel the same way. On the other hand, if the person is rude and smelly but stuck in a cubicle away from the public and does not really have to deal with people and can perform his or her job quickly and accurately, then that would not bother me, either.

You got a point there, Hygiene of course is important and should of course be enforced when you have a job dealing with the public

My ex-husband was a mechanic, so no matter how much he cleaned and scrubbed his hands (and sometimes face, hair and arms) he still looked dirty, because the oil (or whatever it was) just embedded itself into his skin. He was clean and he even smelled nice, but people would look at him like he was dirty and disgusting when we went out sometimes, especially to a somewhat "classy" restaurant, which is why I mentioned the hygiene as I have had personal experience with that.

I don't think employers should turn down someone because their not classy or good looking. It should be based on how well the person can do the job, the skills they have and attitude. If they discrimnate because of how you look then something should be done about that.

I agree, it's not fair to give a job to a person less qualified because he or she is better looking

Yea, same thoughts here. There are many jobs where appearance doesn't play a major role at all. People should not be discriminated by the way the look. It actually reminds me of problem with disabled people. In this case we're talking about limited abilities too, but there are jobs that disabled people can handle. Yesterday I was happy to see two guys with mental disabilities working at the mall as shopping cart collectors. They brought back the shopping carts that customers left outside. It's good that such people have a chance to earn some money too.

There are a few stores here too that hire disable people for the same job....Food for less, Smith and Walmart too. I think it's great except my boyfriend hasn't been able to find a job anywhere.

Yeah I get what you are saying it is very true I guess they are so focused on the image that beauty sells, but it shouldn't matter if it's an ordinary job for me I don't care if somebody serving my food is good looking or not because all I care about is that they bring my food fast so that I could eat. Yeah though most places that do that should be taken to court or something because that in a way is a hate crime or discrimination and well I just know that it's not right.

Do not you insult God's creation, because he was born has been determined by nature. and thank you for not created as they are always getting insults from others. indeed everyone is equal and can help each other regardless of physical or condition of people who are around us so that we can strengthen mutual kinship. and believe me people who are always on the abject and the patient is a person who honored God than people in an arrogant and likes to berate other people lack.

i can perfectly understand what you mean because i am in the process of looking for a job as well... i just lost my stable and good job that i had been doing for almost 6 years about 2 months ago because of my stupidity... and i and my hubby are starting to struggle financially now with bills coming up because my hubby's income is quite low... i hope God will have mercy on us and show us His way soon... we never give up hope and still have faith in Him... good luck to you too... take care and have a nice day...

Typically they're still going to look better than me so...nah I don't mind. I care more about the service I get. Even if I had a supermodel waitress I'd be disapointed if she couldn't keep my glass filled. If your a little heavy, good. You've probably sampled the food & can give me suggestions. A beanpole of a supermodel waitress could only tell my how fresh the water is...

I think there is a lot more focus on the way a person looks than should be at times. Thus the old saying to never judge a book by it's cover. Perception can be a nasty thing. It's strange but there is a stigma in society that carries over into the job market.

hello missy, Perfect statement..."would you go for a face to look at or what kind of service the person can provide for you " i like that (Do you care what a person looks like or what kind of person he or she is?) This reminds me of some agents having chit chat at the pantry during breaks. I heard them talking about people's personality. They are particularly talking about hold-uppers since it is very rampant during this season (people got bonuses and 13th month pay) Then, one says "oh..better careful with good looking guys, they're more to be suspected as hold-uppers than the ugly ones " (hmnn..made sense, who will ever think that a celebrity look a like is a hold-upper huh? ) Okay back to you topic. Here in our country, there is one company that prioritize people who are disabled but are capable of doing work. Of course not totally disabled right, having one arm,one leg, sitting in a wheel chair but mentally capable. Upon knowing this,i changed my brand from that company's product. Yes,i even endorse the company's product to my friends to be patronized,so that the more consumer, the more employees the company will be hiring, the more disabled people will have the chance to be hired. I also commend call centers for being fair when it comes to hiring people. Regardless of personal looks, gender (gays and lesbian are very much welcome they are also human and need some respect)education...you don't need to be professional (Highschool diploma or undergraduates are welcome as long as you can pass the requirements/interviews ,particular with English speaking, fluency and intonation, grammar can be corrected within training process as long you know the right pronunciation)age,no limit and experienced is not also a must (of course HS diploma means from 18 y/o till you drop,60y/o the least for retirees) unlike with other job offers, they required for 25 years old and with at least 3-5 years experienced...experienced? at 25 years old? how come when he/she is just newly graduated and haven't been lucky to get hired due to such requirements (what a crap) I really wonder where those companies get their references to post such job offers with requirements and qualifications (do they know what they are searching for?) Maybe for some particular jobs/fields...but for secretaries as an example...does it means that chubby ladies are not as efficient compared to skinny ones? ugh ugh ... I really love this topic... HAPPY HOLIDAY!

I totally agree with you. It's terribly hard with these companies hiring people with such kind of sound like discrimination the way how people look like...! they should look how that person can contribute to their company instead of judging their looks.!

I think that there is a job that is suited for every person and that is why there is a selection process when apllying to get one. We have to match what our abities for the job that would be given to us. How we look physically is just a part of what the job calls for. We cannot be for example a model of a toothpaste company if our teeth is stained or missing. Its just knowing on your part where you would fit in.

Some people are unfair nowadays. They don't care about the kind of person. They care about what the person looks like. If I'm gonna hire one, I'll need a responsible and hardworking person even if he/she is not good looking.

Everybody's Right..... all of you have a point... This is really happened in the real world... No one ever knows how to handle this kind problem... But I think it can be start here... we can start to ourselves not being judgmental share to our family, friends, relatives, Co-workers and to every person we meet... we need to do something.. lets help ourselves every human have the right to live normal.. everybody is unique having the their own strengths and weaknesses... we do not have a right to compare one person to another... let's be fair to everyone...

I have to say that I agree with you and I also need to point out that some jobs though very few requires pleasing personality. However, as you have mentioned focusing on the not so pleasing looks, it is quite ironic thinking to underestimate those physically imperfect. You are right and I must say that looks can be deceiving. I as a Human Resources Officer is aware of such wrong notion. Many not so good looking have great potentials. Their potentials is internal or within and not visible to the external features. In other words, their potential is in applying the job description. I have observed that many not good looking are good in application or actual job. Beauty is skin deep and I find some with good looks who have empty brain. I hope you understand what I mean by that. ..No offense meant.

Hi missy! I'm afraid that there a people who do discriminate when it comes to the hiring procedures, especially for certain jobs! I don't understand it, but it does happen. Even if it actually is illegal it still happens! I know it happens in retail and could possibly happen in the restaurant business too, although I'm not totally sure. Just like "older people" such as myself are descriminated against because of our age too. If I went to get a job now with all the 20-40 year olds out of work I wouldn't stand a chance of getting hired at any job and I am still quite a ways off until Retirement Age!

That's how it is back in Germany too, if you over 5o and you loose your job you won't be able to find another one. here in Vegas you see a lot of people in their retirement age working though. Some of them look like their going on 80 and still having to work to survive

I see your point and I quite agree with you. If you're not applying for a modeling job where your face and your body is your main criteria, then employers should hire someone who's overweight or not so good-looking. There's no such thing as an ugly person. I find the word to be harsh and inappropriate. Everyone deserves a chance to have a decent job that pays you well. In the long run, attitude and skills will prevail in all types of job.

hi, ugly or whatever it is, they are still a human being, and a citizen of a country, they have also the rights to have a job or to work, yes, there are many company who only get base on their looks, if the applicant is pleasing personality, and there re company also who still hired ugly employee, it because they are get base on the potential of the ugly employee.
