Will Airlines Let Me Take My Martin Backpacker on the Plane?

Specifically... will Continental allow it? I bought this guitar knowing I'd need to take it on a plane, but now I'm freaking out a little that it might be too long for the size requirements. I am positive however that it will fit in the overhead compartment better than the suitcases some people stuff up there. Anyone had experiences traveling with one of these?

Call Continental & ask them what you will need to do to get it there in one piece. If they don't cooperate, then ship it in advance via FedEx or UPS as a "hold for pickup" letting them know when you will arrive. It might cost you a little more, but your guitar will be safer!!! Now that the airliners are charging per bag, I know a lot of people who pre ship their bags so they know the bags will be there when they arrive!!! I don't know of anybody who arrived to lost luggage.

So I could ship it to a UPS store for pickup? That would be pretty convenient. I've already prepaid for more bags than I'm taking so I'm not worried about that, I just don't want the guitar going in cargo.

Just remember that if you put it in the overhead compartment that there may be others putting their bags there too & it may very well become damaged. If it goes with the general baggage, it may very well be damaged. If they insist on sending it in cargo & you pack it well, it just might be safer than the first 2 options. Call the airlines & then call UPS...then make your decision.
