Bluetooth is a short range wireless connection between two devices. It is not a very secure connection but, because it only works over a few metres, this doesn't matter too much. If you use the Bluetooth connection when in a public place it is possible (but not very straightforward) for another Bluetooth enabled phone within about 10 metres or less to pick up the transmission and make a connection with yours. It is always wise to turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it.

From this (and reading the comments) you will see that, really, the only way to be completely secure is to turn Bluetooth OFF when you are in a crowded public area. Even using the built-in security so that you don't broadcast your presence and using the 'pairing' feature doesn't give you much protection.

I did have a quite related experience. One day, I left my Bluetooth connection enabled. When I was gonna check what time is it, I saw a pop up that I received a file even if I didn't accept it. If I'm not mistaken, the name of the file is Beauty. It somewhat put virus in my memory card. My cellphone started to reject my memory card since the file entered my cellphone. I could not delete it for some reason. I just managed to delete it using my Laptop.
