Daunting Discussions

Okay, I realize that the goal here on mylot is to get a good discussion going and keep it going but at what point do you just want to drop it? Personally, I find discussions with two or more pages of responses a little daunting to read through. Today I found one with five pages and it was still going strong! I tend to go more for quality rather than quantity of responses. How about you? Do you have the time and patience to read through and possibly respond to five pages of responses in a discussion? I'd get lost. Of course, a part of that is my dyslexia but still...I'm just curious to know where you all draw that line?

I try to make sure I stay up to date with my discussions so that 5 pages are dealt with as they come in, or near enough, when I get behind for some reason (like I haven't had some reasons to get behind lately) then I do find it hard to catch up and part of why I have so many unresolved discussions...

well, you see, I seldom go back and discuss all the comments on other people's discussions, I only go looking if someone other than the original poster responds to mine... I'm bad...

There is only so much a body can do. We only have 24 hours in a day. But I'm not even talking about the discussions I start, necessarily. I've come in on a new discussion started by a friend and there's already 5 pages. When that happens I just skip it.

Daunting is right. I had no previous knowledge that the idea was to get a good discussion going and keep it going and I have been a long time member. I'm with you in that if there are pages and pages of responses, I usually just dismiss my responding all together simply because guidelines have it that we are to read each response to a discussion before posting our own. Five pages of responses is far too much for myself. Of course this would entirely depend on the topic of discussion itself as sometimes I am into reading and reading, should I be getting a good amount of new knowledge from the majority of the responses themselves. However, I believe in quality has the utmost ability to over ride quantity, hands down. Not only that but five pages of responses makes it extremely hard to choose a best response as well. I don't really draw any lines. Time provided I can go on and on as well but I am most comfortable with two pages of responses max. After that it just gets to be too time consuming for myself, personally.

Time consuming is right...even if I were not dyslexic, there are so many other things that I do with my time. I like to give an hour a day to each activity but many of these discussions I could spend an entire hour just reading the single discussion, much less respond to it.

And some could take all day!

First I would like to say that I have read through all of the response and comments here before responding as I always do. I read for more than I respond too. I'm here most every day but will go weeks, even months without responding. Why you ask, long story. Suffice it to say that usually by the time I have read through pages of response I can't add anything new, but still enjoy the discussions. Now if i had dyslexia it would probably be a completely different story. So where do I draw the line, mostly if there are more than 5 pages I won't bother unless it's something that truly interests me. Some discussions it's just because I can't believe some of the responses to the discussion and have to read them all and am still utterly amazed at some. Other days I come on here and will only read the first couple of pages still doesn't mean that I will respond just depends on the discussion and whether I can put a different perspective on the discussion. Sometimes it's nice to come to a discussion like this that is older and already a best response has been chosen, so it's not as active, but I'm able to get a good understanding of what the poster was originally trying to convey. So in answer to your question 9 out of 10 times I draw the line at reading through more than 5 pages of responses to actually leave a response. Doesn't mean that I never read more than that just the majority of the time. I do enjoy good discussions with lots of interaction, especially the ones that I really can sink my teeth into. Meaning I have lots of room to jump into different boxes and leave my comments throughout the discussion. I'm sorry that you were so misunderstood in this discussion. I actually get more daunted by my own discussions when I get lots of responses that all say the same thing, it's difficult to comment back saying something different to 30 people. I think that's why I read through before replying, as I know first hand how difficult it is for the poster to comment. Happy Mylotting!!!

Sometimes it's difficult to determine a posters meaning, since we are only using words, sometimes the emoticans work if they are used properly. (I try not to over use the emoticons in my responses or discussions, only to emphasize a happy emotion when my words even to me still sound harsh. Sadly I see so many that just post the emoticans that don't fit for what they were saying.) I have been misunderstood many times, to the point that I won't start a discussion, even when I have a great one to start because I can't stand to have to explain my self over and over. Your very welcome, we all deserve the benefit of the doubt, but we should try to be respectfull regardless. We are all intitled to our opinions.

True! I know with me the emoticons available here don't always fit the emotion I'm wanting to express. I try to find one close enough but sometimes I just wonder if it's worth it. LOL And I do try to keep things light and friendly as much as possible but some days nothing I can do will succeed in that. Still, I can't really complain as I have made some really good friends here who do "get" me and respect me as a person. It's a warm, wonderful feeling when two minds meet and even when they differ can still respect each other. I love my friends that I have made here and on other sites.

Thank you for your understanding and thoroughness in reading all the posts here. Yes, it can be difficult when my meaning is misunderstood. On the other hand, I think it makes it all that more lovely when someone finally does understand where I'm coming from. I always try to be clear in my explanations but some folks just either fail to really read the entire post or else they just don't understand what I'm saying before they respond. It is important to try and understand...and respect a different viewpoint...when responding to a discussion. Thank you again for affording me the respect and understanding I needed.

"I tend to go more for quality rather than quantity of responses." Are you implying that the responses on a topic that receives pages and pages of responses are not quality? I presume that when a discussion also has responses where many others post and debate in the individual response boxes, it also gets a thumbs down from you? This is sad because the discussions where there are many exchanges of opinion are often the most interesting ones. I don't draw a line anywhere. When I see an interesting topic I stop and start reading the responses that are already there (no matter how many pages there already are) and if I see a responses where I want to add something else then I will leave a comment too. When I get to the last page I then add my own response, unless what I wanted to say has already been said. I can understand that for many reasons (poor connection or those posting from their cell-phones) the discussions with many pages of responses might be daunting for some, but to suggest that a discussion with more than two pages of responses is then not a quality discussion is an extremely negative viewpoint

Me, a fight? I am the most placid person around, I think, and I certainly never respond with the intention of causing a stir. I merely copy/pasted a line from your topic and responded to it. I was offended by that phrase, both for myself and for those who are responders on one of those topics which draws in pages and pages of responses. If you feel 'bogged down' then allow me to be sorry for you, on behalf of those who start those topics, because by skipping them you will often miss some great interactions. As you say, to each his own Happy New Year!

Mysdianait, you presume too much. I imply nothing. If you want a fight go somewhere else. Quit trying to read things into my post that are not there, thank you very much. I have never given a discussion a TD. If I feel too bogged down, I simply don't respond to a discussion and move on. To each his own. I was just wanting to know what others did. I have never tried to insult anyone. But then, I guess some folks will be insulted no matter what I say.

hi alaskanray oh come on do not be that la zy I would think you would want us to get more responses. no I do not mind re ading through pages as most mod ern young people do not write more than four or fivc liones in their responses so its shorter than reading a short story. And for G sakes what do you mean those responses I get because I get a lot are not quality responses?I do have the time and the patience as I am retired and also have almost 900 friends. I do get at least 24 or more responses on a lot of my discussions and so what? its my business and if you are not mylot police then what is it to you?And I do try to comment back to all the responses I get.

I'm not being lazy, Hatley. Nor am I speaking necessarily to the discussions I have started. I try very hard to keep up on my own discussions but those that I want to respond to are a different matter! If I have to read through more than a page of responses before posting my own, it can become very daunting.

Hi alaska, It depend on the nature of the discussion. If it is an absorbing one you could read more than five pages but once again I am talking about the quality things. Most people here tend to make a short response and hardly take into account the quality aspect. Even for me quality counts more than quantity. But you can not check people from responding to your discussion.

Yeh, I know. I was just curious as to what others did. I realize that I have a unique perspective since my dyslexia interferes with much of my reading. I just like comparing notes. Sometimes I can feel so alone. Besides the dyslexia, I also lack the ability to visualize. I mean, if I ever read a novel I find myself skipping whole paragraphs because they mean nothing to me and don't affect the action in the book so I just cut to the chase. Reading page after page in a discussion becomes time consuming and with so many here for whom English is not their primary language, interpreting the poor grammar can become exhausting for one who is already struggling with reading. I have to laugh at myself or I would cry.

in conducting discussions on MyLot does require patience, because we have to read the content of these discussions and we'll respond to the discussion. but if we be patient and continue to diligently respond to the discussion, we certainly will get the payment from MyLot for the results of our work during the discussion and respond.

Considering that mylot is only one of many sites I visit to earn money, I must limit the amount of time I invest here. I do have a life outside of mylot.

Well, I think it's a great thing if one is able to setup a discussion that can last and last, I mean, this just tells us that it's a good subject with spread opinions right! For me, I think it's also quite a job to read through all the responses people post, but then again it's also good to hear from all sides what people think right?! I think a discussion should though be based on good arguments and not just people posting something that's been said 10 times already. I guess quality does go over quantity for me then!
