I was surprised to see this news. I expected him to retire sooner rather than later, but retiring in the middle of the season with immediate effect really surprised me. Gary Neville has been a great player for Man U and has had a career or nearly 20 years with United. During this time he has won almost all the titles that were up for grabs including FA Cups, Leagues, Champions Leagues and Carling Cups. I wish him well for his future endeavors. Cheers! Ram

It is sad that Gary took the decision in the middle of the season...atleast he should have waited and announced it at the end of the season...its a great loss for ManU & the fans...All the best to him.

The timing of his announcement is very surprising. In the middle of the season and with Utd in a good position. But I must say, I aint sad to see him go. He is one of the most hated players in the premier league. But Utd should not worry too much. Rafael is definitely a good, if not better, replacement.

:) Any player who has played at that highest level and has played in the defense has to be one of most hated figures :). Arsene Wenger said the other day about Gary that he is a great player, but had you listened to some of his rants in the tunnel then that would be nothing compared to what Fabregas was being criticized by David Moyes. Cheers! Ram

The timing o0f the announcement does seem a bit strange but Gary Neville has been linked with a job on Sky due to the sacking of Andy Gray and the resignation of Richard Keys. You never know he may have a job lined up.

Yes, that is the news doing round around this sudden decision. But subsequent reports seem to suggest that he is not going to take it just yet. Another news doing rounds is that he is having a coaching job lined up. Let's see how this pans out. Cheers! Ram

It is a shocking news. Van der Sar is retiring at the end of the season and for Neville to retire in midway is shocking. He was a loyal player and teams need players like him who care for the club rather than the money.

Yes, I think the injuries have taken a toll on him for the last few years now. I think he wanted to quit on his own terms rather than be asked to step down by Fergie. Cheers! Ram

he has had a great career. He was won many titles like you said, including leagues, cups, champions league, and club world cup. I am actually surprised he didn't retire earlier because he has so many injury problems. He is a great play but injuries have really hampered the end of his career. I am not surprised it is the middle of the season when he retires because he likely won't play at all this season due to his injury problems.

I think Sir Alex put in place a strategy to phase him out this season. That is why Vidic was handed the captain's armband at the start of the season. But even then I would have expected him to wait till the end of the season to make the announcement. Cheers! Ram

This is a real shock. But he hasn't been playing much as of late and it makes sense at his age and his situation to retire. The timing was definitely shocking but Man U will move on with him, this was a big loss for them though

Yes, that is what stumped me as well. I would have thought that he would wait till the end of this season to make the announcement. But the thought process must have been in place for some time as Vidic was named the captain at the start of this campaign. Cheers! Ram
