Appropriate attire for a Broadway musical?

Sometime in the next few months I am hoping to be able to see an evening performance Spiderman: Turn off the Dark on Broadway and I have been shopping for dresses to wear but I am not really sure what I should be looking for. I've kind of been shopping in the "red carpet" style - the "do" list of things people wear to big movie premiers and awards shows. Is that "overdressed" or just right?

We just went to Wicked last night. Most everyone was dressed nice. Not exactly formal wear, but nice dress. Although some people were in jeans and t-shirts so I guess it doesn't matter too much. Hope you enjoyed the show.

Personally for me, if I was to go and see a Broadway show or performance like this, I would try looking nice, but not go out of my way to go buy an expensive new outfit. I think dressed up but not overdoing it would be fine for sure. I would say that type of dress would be more for like a Fancy restaurant, or a ball or a cruise, but I guess in a way if you really feel like dressing up as long as others are not dressed too down from that anything could be Ok.
