I let my daughter play with my smart phone to sometimes keep her quiet. I have an iPhone. I will admit, I'm an App junkie. I download tons of apps, mostly free. I have apps that are on my phone, games and such for the kids to play when I need them to be patient or I am busy (i.e. doctors appt's, in my office, etc.) One app she downloaded was FREE to download but then when she went to feed her imaginary "foo pet", it cost real money to buy the imaginary dog food. I ended up calling Apple and I was able to get the $15 she spent refunded, however, they suspended my account which took forever to un-disable & on top of it, the credit card was banned from use on iTunes. Has this happen to anyone else? Any thoughts on these FREE apps? I saw on the news that this happen to one lady and the charges from Smurf berries in the Smurf game amounted to $1400! The worst part is the kids don't need a pass code to make these charges once the app is installed on your phone!

dear yes i have heard the same story many times before. Its a scam and something should be done! Children can end up spending tons of money on these little apps that say "free". And if you have your credit card hooked up to your itunes account its even worse! Its not the kids fault its the apps. and if apple isn't going to stop these kind of apps i think parents should at least have the feature to password protect it.

Well these are called in-app purchases. The developers tries to trick you to think it is a free app but only very limited stuff is free inside and once you got addicted you are tempted to buy the upgrades in the game.

I think something definitely needs to be done because these are like scams. There is nothing to keep you are your children from accidentally adding charges to your account! Since everything having to do with your phone is reflected on your bill (since your carrier knows all the charges incurred on your account), it seems like random charges could show up all the time and very easily! I agree with you that it's way too easy to rack up a cell phone bill. I'm an apps fanatic myself, but I have a Droid. What I try to do before downloading a "free" app is to read the reviews. I have yet to see an app that doesn't have at least one review. The people who leave those comments will usually tell you whether or not there is a charge after the fact. For instance, there is an app out there where you can actually use your phone as a credit card reader (with a free scanner they send you once you install the app). The scanner actually is FREE, but once you start running the credit cards, there is a charge for each transaction somewhere down the line. While it probably makes sense to charge for something like that, if I hadn't read the reviews, I would've had no idea! It's sad how careful you have to be nowadays because it's like everyone is begging for your matter using any means possible!
