Hi I need to travel to Minnesota by train but I can't figure out how much it will cost me. I need to travel from Sacramento, CA to Shakopee,Minnesota . How much will the roundtrip cost me? I need to be there only from March 24- March 28. What are my options? Those of you who travel a lot, please let me know ASAP! Thank You all in advance!

You will need to take the 14 Coast Starlight from Sacramento (SAC) at 2:19am on 21 Mar 2011 for Portland, OR (PDX), arr. 5:40pm. You will need to overnight in Portland and take the 28 Empire Builder at 4:45pm on 22 Mar 2011 for St. Paul/Minneapolis (MSP) arr. 7:05am 24 Mar 2011. Cost for that trip would be $72 + $159. I didn't calculate your return journey but you will need to do the same as I did (check the two legs separately). The Amtrak website can't, apparently, give you journeys where arrival and departure at an intermediate stop are on different days! (I didn't try the 'Multi City' option). http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak

Shakopee is 20 miles from St. Paul/Minneapolis. You either need to arrange to be collected, get a cab or use one of the local transit systems: http://www.ci.shakopee.mn.us/transit.cfm

The prices I quoted did not include the cost of rooms. You may not need one on the trip to Portland but the Portland - St. Paul trip is 36 hours, so you'd probably need one. That puts the price up considerably!

The alternative route (which I didn't check) is to Chicago via SLC and Denver and then to St. Paul. Try using the Multi City option to calculate each leg. It seems to be easier when you get to the shopping cart (which is the only way of calculating the real price).
