What do you think about having a job while in college?

Having a job while in college can be a difficult task. Students need money, but they also need to spend time on homework, sports, and other things. Do you think that having a job is a good thing for college students, or do you think it hinders their ability to get good grades?

For me, it's essential - there's no option there. The bills don't pay themselves, the rent doesn't pay itself, and that darn tuition definitely doesn't pay for itself... When you have parents that you can mooch off of (I hate to say this, but it's true) you may not need income - for things like rent, health insurance, credit cards, car insurance, groceries, gas, tuition - etc - but that's never how it's been with me. I can understand that working can distract you from your school life - but working fulfills an immediate need - something we all need - MONEY.

I agree! I almost feel bad for the kids who do not have to work because their parents supply everything for them. They have no job experience for when they graduate! Personally, I have always enjoyed working, and it, of course, is a necessity. It's unfortunate that everything revolves around money, but it is a fact of life.

Hehe. I'm glad you agree... I have a lot of friends who don't have to work while in school..And I do agree with you in that job experience, whatever the kind, is important. PLUS it gives you the "financially independent" factor and kind of helps you grow up, I think. People who don't work in college are definitely losing out. But I also feel bad for the college kids who have to have 2 jobs and work so much that it interrupts their learning at the same time. I think it's about finding a balance?

My daughter is graduating in College this year and she tutors English online. She said she enjoys it, because same students keeps requesting for her . She tutors when she finished studying at night or in her vacant days. Her grades were not affected at all, they are even getting better , she said.

I went to work full time while going to college, but i took all my college classes online and did all of my work at night and while at work or on lunch break i tried finding time to get onto my class and do my homework or i would say submit it and upload it to the class. It was a difficult thing to do but i was able to handle it and my grades may not have been the bet but i can say i did pass all my classes and i have my college degree. I like my online classes as i knew when things were due upon entering the week. Try your hardest and i wish you the best of luck if you get a job.

When I was at College I knew a few people on my Course and on other courses that had part time jobs and I have known younger people who have since gone and worked part time a few hours a week alongside their studies. I think it depends on the person and the course. I would say to anyone who does have a part time job alongside their studies. If you have any problems keeping up then it would be a good idea for you to stop and concentrate on your studies.

I worked full time when I was in college and had my classes at night. It was tough but I was lucky to have an understanding boss who knew I also need to study. When It is not a busy day in the office, he allows me to read my class notes. When I get home, I find time to prepare for the next day's classes. I really had to manage my time. It was difficult and I made it. There are students who need to work to earn extra. It would depend on the student how to manage and balance work and study. Have a nice day.

Hi there! I believe it depends mainly on the student if he can do it at the same time without affecting his/her grades. There are some I know who can really take a job and have high grades in their subjects. Mainly, if the reason of a student why he/she needs to work because of lack of funds for his/her tuition, then most likely the student really wants to finish his studies and graduate with good grades. See yah!

When I was in college I only worked during the summers. This worked out fine for me. I was able to save enough to pay for my books for the following semester and have a little spending money. My parents also helped me out with spending money and I was still living at home so I didn't need to pay bills. My parents would not have let me work while I was in school because that was my job.
