About Unions... for the record..

For the record, I will restate my position on unions. Because of my recent posts about the situation in Wisconsin, some have the idea that I want unions to be abolished. That is simply not true! I am all for the existence of unions, and think they should be an option for those who want to join them. On the other hand, I completely resent any laws, regulations or rules requiring anyone to join them. In other words, I respect freedom of choice here. You should have the freedom to join a union.. but that freedom should also include the freedom to not have anything to do with any union. It's called Freedom of Association, and is one of our rights. The first amendment guarantees that right.. unions not only oppose it, they are among the worst violators of it. If you feel that you are better off being represented by a union, go ahead, join a union! However, have enough integrity and respect for the rights of others to allow that freedom of choice to others. You simply can't say you support the 1st amendment if you would force someone to be in, or pay into a union against their will.

Yes, I agree with your stance but the overall value of the unions outweighs this choice. Even in professional sports players are forced into the players union but the individuals do not have a choice because of the unions value to the employees. A union is an employee's voice in the workplace.

If a worker is forced to be in the union, the union itself is silencing the voice of the worker. It is unconstitutional, unethical, and dishonest to force anyone to join a union against their will.

Yes you are totally correct but it happens regardless. Look at the NFL right now the players union is negotiating a new collective bargining agreement with the owners to avoid a lockout. When a player gets drafted in the NFL he is in the players union regardless of choice.

Yes, it happens regardless, with means rights, ethics and honesty mean nothing to them. It is slavery.

I agree with you. I believe unions have their place in society. Meant to be there for fairness and safety. when that job is done, time to move on. However, unions get too big and out of control. They want to set laws and policies and I did not elect them to do so. I would be so pissed if my money was being used in this way. Money taken from me and used when I have no choice in the matter. Wow to say it out loud, it sure sounds like the government, but oh yeah we elected them...

Freedom of choice is the key, and like everything where human nature is involved in there is good and bad... hardcore communistic unions are the bad, good unions with the interest of the workers is the good, I have seen both but have only been involved in one and it was a good one and it is good if they can stay out of politics as well...

I agree with you that joining a Union should be a choice for all. I also however believe that people who choose not to join should have to pay some fee to the Union just for the cost of the Bargaining Agreement that the Union secures for them and the Benefits they gain from still getting the same coverage as a member of the Union.
