Haroon Logart: ICC will trim the next WC to 10 teams from 14

The ICC chief has said that they are considering to trim the number of participating teams from 14 to 10 from the next edition since they have been criticised for poorly implementing the formats for WC tournamnet...it seems to be a bad move since ICC's motto is to promote cricket and make it a global sports...so instead of taking a step forward...this would be a step taking backwards.... what do you say guys..

Looking at the quality of the matches that we have seen so far with the associates, I think this is actually a good move. It does not help associates to play in one tournament every four years and then get humiliated. I think it is more important to have a series of the associates with the top teams once every year and that would help their development. It would also help top teams to try out their youngsters. Cheers! Ram

Yup, the quality has been poor atleast at the initial stages, but have at the same time thrown up excellent matches...it would not be an easy decision for ICC to make for trimming looking at the future...more emphasis need to be given to the series for associates as rightly mentioned by you.

I think it is a good idea. one and half month is too long a period for any tournament. They should trim down the number to 10 or at the most 12. With first 8 finishers of this cup getting automatic qualification for the next world cup and remaining 4 teams should compete with other associate members to qualify for the remaining 2 or 4 places of the next cup. With this there would be at least one test playing country competing in qualification tournament which will automatically get recognition and importance by this method. I.C.C. will be able to propagate cricket better by this way.

Agree that 1.1/2 months is too much, but we can have 2-3 mathces played in a day with so many teams participating and make the duration smaller...this is like taking a step behind in globalising cricket...isn't it...they can still try out various thing to make it more competitive, just like the idea given by you..it won't hurt for atleast for one WC..

this should be done. when you are talking about World cup, then we dont expect teams who cannot even score more than 100 runs. this is just waste of time and resource. i am sure there were not many people to see the match between NZ and Kenya. i mean what is the use of this. look at football world cup, they have qualifiers and those who can qualify are the only teams that will play in the WC. I know we don't have many teams in the cricket so qualifiers are not required, but we should not introduce teams in world cup. they should be given chance in normal triangular series and things like that, where they will get exposure and then we the ICC thinks a team is performing well, they have won certain number of matches in a year etc, they can give them the chance to play a world cup.

I am of the view that since cricket's popularity has to be spread to other countries, we should have at least 12 or 14 countries. Trimming to 10 countries won't help. We must remember that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were once beaten easily by other teams, yet now they are considered quite good (Sri Lanka in fact won the cup once and been runners-up in 2007 world cup). So, we should give a chance to other teams too.

I'm in agreement with you on the comments...the Irish are a good side, they need exposure..probably getting the associates to play the 'A' sides could help them gain experience and make cricket more competitive and also boost their moral
