On the 23th of Feb. I went to have a filling replaced after only having it filled 2 weeks earlier by the same dentist. Well they numbed the left side of my mouth & put in the new filling. The next day my husband & I left for our vacation & during this time I noticed that even though most of the numbness went away the left side of my tounge was still numb. So my husband called my dentist to find out what was going on & they said that this was completely normal, that there was nothing to worry about & that some people didn't get the feeling back in their tounge for up to a month later. I have never heard of this before & I've had fillings put in before & teeth pulled as well where my mouth had to be numbed but never have I ever had this problem before nor heard of this ever happening. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Should I be worried that this dentist may have cause permnent damage to my tounge & I may never get the feeling back? What should I do? Please help!!

I have never heard of that, my mouth is usually totally un-numbed after about 4 hours after I go to the dentist. I have never heard of something staying numb for more than 24 hours let alone 2 weeks. I honestly don't know what advice to give you but I would certainly call a different dentists office and ask them if this is something that is normal or something you should have looked at by a doctor. It sounds really strange to me. I hope you are able to get all of your feeling back.

I did call another Dentist for a 2nd opinion & they said the same thing. They said although it is unheard of it has been know to happen & that in a couple of months I would get feeling back in my tongue. Well they were right I did get feeling back in my tongue, but it didn't come back until a little over 6 months later.

I actually have heard of this before. This very same thing happened to my cousin. She thought she would never get feeling back in her tongue but eventually(like about 6 or 7 months later that is)she did indeed get full feeling back in her tongue.

Well I ended up with the same result. It did eventually go away & I now have full feeling in my tongue. Just took a long while for it to heal I guess.

Sounds like he hit a major nerve with the injection. It does take time for nerves to 'come back awake'. If he said it might be a month, then I'd wait a month and then get back with him. I cut the tip of my finger almost off last year and had to have sutures. The fingertip was numb for months until the nerve regenerated. It still has not regained full feeling but it's serviceable. So, I'd suggest that you give it the time the dentist recommended.

My husband & I called another Dentist office just to see what they would say & they pretty much said what you said, so I guess I will wait. It's just so frustrating & so very uncomfortable. I've never had this happen to me before nor have I ever heard of it happening before. But I will take the advice that's been give to me by both you & the Dentist & just wait & see what happens. I just hope I don't have to stay this way for the rest of my life. That would drive me crazy.

Nah, it won't last for the rest of your life. But it will surely take time. Don't expect it to be all well by next week or too soon. I know it's uncomfortable but you'll be okay. I was an RN in my 'other life' before I had to retire and I've seen this before. That's why I didn't worry too much when the nerve in my finger needed to get well. Best of luck to you.

Thank you very much. I'm still having this problem, but I am trying to be patient & just wait it out & hope for the best.
