Baby jar food or fresh made food?

My son is turning 6 months soon meaning he will soon get to have solid food. I wonder what I should begin with, like mushy carrot? banana? apple? Do I give him any meat yet? And how many times a day? When do I feed him milk then? Do I still need to feed him every 3-4 hours milk if he has solid food??? I have lots of questions I will wait until he has the 6 month check up then I will see what the pediatrician says. So what did you feed him when you introduced solid to your baby? My mother didn't feed us any baby jar food when we were baby, she made it all for us. Is it actually better to do fresh food or it is not a big deal?

I have used both baby jar food and freshly made food in the past. After a few days, baby jar food seems to get watery. When you make your own, it seems to keep fresher longer. it might be more convenient to buy baby food in jars, but making your own is more economical and you can be sure of its ingredients.

We went to the government clinic & the nurses told us that we don't have to start him on solid until 6 months as the formula milk he takes is sufficient enough as there are all the nutrients he needs. Of course the old school of thoughts from our parents' generation is to start him with broth at 4 months but there's no need to overload his system at such a young age says the nurses. Our doctor says to be on the safe side is to wait until 9 months and the baby can have everything, the wait is to prevent unnecessary allergies. We were advised to give him one type of food at a time when we introduce him to solid but we mixed them all up anyways as neither my wife nor I had any food allergies. But this is for our case, again every baby is different so you'll have to find out. I would say that best is to go back to your doctor as that's what we do as we find that government nurses here often times try to be too smart

Oops sorry, forgot to answer the question, haha~!My wife blends the food in the beginning ( 6 months ). Only up till 8 months that she started to mash his food. She always prepares a lot & portions it out, then freeze his food in the freezer, only taking the portions out for the day. 1 portion fed, the other kept in our multifunction pressure cooker just under reheat mode until evening for the next mealWe've bought him his biscuits recently - Farley's Rust. So far we've never let him tried any jar food.

Yup, should steam the food but if it's too hard you might want to blend it 1st.

For me, I prefer freshly made foods. It's much better and healthier than the ones they sell in the grocery store bottled and preserved. It has some ingredients that may be bad for your kids health in the long run. while freshly made foods such as boiled veggies and fresh fruits has fresh vitamins and minerals in them. Also good for baby's digestion.

Of coarse for both my son and daughter i started out with the baby cereal. As suggested by their doctors. With my son i made the baby food with a blender and frooze it into icecubes. Labeled it all and stored in freezer bags. I had a sectioned electric heated dish that would thaw it out and keep it warm for him. With my daughter before she began eating solids i would always mash some of my food to give her bites of stuff. Introducing her to all kind of stuff before she actually started eating baby food. I bought the comerical baby foods for her.

I would like to say to give baby food fresh food. Because nature is best in every condition. But now a days if you cannot manage fresh food you should give high and best quality food to your baby.

The jarred food is ok for the first time you are introducing it to them but it is mostly water not much nutrition so it's not really that great fr them. They do say now adays to give them meats from 6 months and food does NOT have to be purreed anymore because their gums do just as good as their teeth will. My son started everything at 5 months because I felt he was ready. when they first start solid only feeling them solids once a day to begin with is usually what I have been told then slowly increasing it to 3 times by the time they hit 8 months. They won't generally need as much formula because they will fill up partly on food. most doctors say 9 months for dairy except milk. no milk til a year but I was told when I had my first to give milk at 9 months and that is what I did with all my kids. I have 3 kids the youngest is 11mths and he started whole milk 2 months ago but he has that usually with formula as well.

Of course the fresh made food is the best because it is natural and won't contain any chemical stuff. Since the jar food needs to be stored for some time. In case it go bad, it should be added some chemical stuff to keep it fresh. So you can see whether this is good or not. You can start to feed your child little fresh food step by step. Such as at first you can just feed him 1/4 yolk and so on. His digestion systm will get used to these new food slowly. Besides, make sure you still give him milk because it is very important for babies. I love China

Hello! For me, nothing could ever beat the freshly made food prepared with love by mothers like us. We will be sure enough with the content of the food that we would feed our babies. Yes, its very convenient to feed them with baby foods packed in a jar but they're too soft, unlike home made baby foods that we could adjust the consistency with the age of our babies. You could try freshly mashed fruits like bananas, apples or oranges. Potatoes, carrots and mixed with green veggies are packed with high nutritional contents that could ensure the good health of your baby. Have a nice day!

My opinion is that you should try to give him fresh vegetables mashed. Try anything. You will soon find out what he likes and does not. Jar foods are convenient, but it cannot beat freshly prepared - healthwise. He will still drink milk, but try to give him solid food first. You can start feeding him solid now, just to get him used to the change. Don't expect him to like everything straightaway. 5 months is old enough to start having solid food. I start feeding my older daughter solid food when she was 4 months.

I started giving him mushy rice when he was 4 months just to get him to eat with the spoon, he didn't like it at the beginning and he has finally accepted it after I kept trying everyday. Thanks for your opinions.

Hi mermaidivy, You are doing a wonderful job with your baby, I can see that from many of your discussions. I too preferred the home made foods for my children when they started out. The baby foods have certainly improved a great deal in nutritional value. I think it would be okay to use when convenient like when you are not able to do so at home. Otherwise I would prefer the homemade foods.

Homemade foot is anytime better the packaged one. Here are some nutritious options you can try Vegetables:boiled and mashed potatos and carraots. Fruits: Mashed banana - you can prepare a very thick banana shake, thick chickoo shake, build and mashed apple jelly kind off. Grapes juice, mashed papaya. You can also give me overcooked and mashed rice. Banana's mashes in curd is also good or you can try simple curd. hope your kid likes your preparations.
