In my situation right now, I really need to cope up with it as soon as possible. I am 7mos pregnant, and they said I need to get over with anemia because it is a big problem if I run out of blood from labor or might cost more in hospital because of blood that is needed to put in me. They said seafoods is a good source of iron and also liver. But I ate a lot of liver when it is serve in my meal and I also love seafoods. I also eat some leafy vegetables and some fruits. I've also been advised to a medicine to help my hemoglobin more reddish. Are all these useless if I sleep late? I cant really sleep early cause my baby is so active.

You've got many responses to take iron tablets and to eat seafood and liver. When I was pregnant I took naps during the day. I did lay down for 30 min - 1 hour to rest up at least twice a day.

I do take a rest at noon, sleeping for 3hrs to 5hrs. And I also took naps 15-30mins while at work. :D

I was anemic in my last pregnancy but I didn't know that. I was having a vegan multi vitamin pill that included Iron. I had a home birth with a midwife present. When the placenta came out it had four blood clots. Then I went into heavy bleeding plus I felt like air was hard to get and ever so faint. I kept fainting and had a terrible headache. I was taken off to hospital by ambulance and they managed to stop the bleeding. I said no to a blood transfer and got better naturally. I eat a vegan diet so I ate foods rich in Iron but vegan: dried apricots, spinach, nuts and leafy vegetables. I stayed four nights in hospital and then when I came back home I was very weak for the next eight weeks. Slowly I made a full recovery. Good luck with getting your Iron up to the right amount in your body. I hope that the remainder of your pregnancy will go well.

A good idea is to take iron AND folate supplements/vitamins; the folate helps absorb the iron better. You can go to your local chemist/pharmacy and ask about it and they can help you figure out how much you should take while you're pregnant. Eating all the right foods is great, but they don't have ENOUGH iron in them to get you through one day. Eating the foods your eating does help but you still need that boost of supplements/vitamins to get the right levels of iron and folate. Sleeping late doesn't affect the absorption of the iron, although having plenty of rest will help you feel more energised.

I've seen some research online that vitamin C helps absorption of iron. So I also maintain fruit juice that are rich in vitamin c which is orange and others too.

Apart from everything suggested here, I'd like to add that iron rich food and fruits help. When I was pregnant, my Ob-Gyn advised me to take at least a bowl of sprouts, apple or any other fruit that goes brown when left in the open air (sign of iron presence) everyday. Most Indian doctors prescribed Folic Acid and Iron supplements to all pregnant women, regardless of the Hemoglobin level. It turns out the supplement are not really necessary for women with normal hemoglobin level. I don't see the harm though. Try to get lots of rest. Good Luck.

I wasn't advice to take folic acid supplements as I have a milk for pregnant to cover with that. I sleep at noon till late afternoon and if I don't have work I sleep like a log like 11hrs.

I believe that you should pay attention to that diet, that was recommended to you. It is a diet I used when I was growing up to overcome this problem. The reason for this, is that everyone has eat, but to take medication it has to be prescribed, and taken on a timely basis. you do no want any dosage that goin to harm the Baby.

I was only given one medicine to drink during bedtime. Though I notice it isn't enough so I find foods that would help me in other ways.

one home remedy my husband was advised and worked and its pretty harmless, buy some jaggery and have a small amount just a bite empty stomach each day early in the morning and also you can take one banana and a cup of milk each day to keep up with your iron and calcium intake. I used to take two with one glass but then my baby became to heavy next time I stopped taking it at ninth month so my baby was healthy but not over weight. Even having raw spinach with some salt and lemon also helps but best is jaggery or Gud as we call it here.

I have suffered with anemia all my life. I manage to get it balanced and at times it gets out of control. Lots of sauteed red meat is advisable and I am always on iron supplements. Being that you are pregnant, the prenatal vitamins as well as iron should be helping if not then you do need to ear high iron producing foods as possible. I am surprised that you do not sleep well because anemia usually causes tiredness and sleepiness all the time. Do follow your doctors advise regarding the iron because the baby will certainly require it and or you can have your hemoglobin counts way too low.

Hello ..First of all I don`t think that seafood and fruits have enough iron that you need.Iron exist a lot in the liver-any kind, and in bloodred fruits and vegetables:red beetroot-you may eat it raw or boiled with vinegar and salt:cranberries and blueberries contains a lot of iron. And you also have to consume it with a lot of C vitamin because otherwise the iron will be not absorbed. If you are anemic, your child will be also anemic because he inherited these from you.God bless you.
