Hi everyone, After all the calamities that struck the globe for the last weeks, let us do our part by joining Earth Hour 2011. Let's switch everything off for even for an hour and you might want to pair it w/ a simple prayer for all of those affected by these calamities. Schedule in the Philippines is on March 26 8.30-9.30PM.

It's a good event & hopefully it serves as a reminder for those who always forget to turn their lights off after coming out from the toilet at night, or always just simply leave everything on & not bothering to turn them off to save energy

Since you're new here, just to highlight @staria Yup, we should be conscious of that in our everyday living, not just at a particular date, just one day in a whole yearHaha!~

I think earth hour shouldn't be done in one day only.it should be done everyday.we should do our part to help save the environment.in my own way,I do help the environment.heck,I am even doing it in terms of fashion since I buy secondhand clothes.its very much like recycling.

That's great coco! And I also observe turning off the lights and other appliances if I do not use them. This Earth hour is actually done to spread awareness. So that the whole world will be alerted that energy should be conserved, imo.

I will be in the office tonight, so for sure my lights are out tonight and the only appliances of mine that will use electricity are my fridge and my aquarium pump, so for sure I was saving electricity everyday because I am not using it every night because no one is at my apartment room, everynight. I wonder if my office will participate, they did it last year

honestly, what does switching everything off for a specific time and period do? i almost always encounter these activities-for-a-cause and i don't participate. not because i don't want to, but because i can't make any sense out of it. suppose i'll turn everything off for an hour on the date and time you mentioned. then what? wouldn't it be more effective and efficient if i conserve energy every minute of each day? i only use energy devices when necessary. and i turn off anything that is not. almost everytime. so, if i could be enlightened with this for-a-cause thing, maybe i could participate too (with an idea of what i'm doing, to say the least).

Hi Murkie! This event is done to show/spread awareness to those who do not know or observe energy consumption. During this event too (at least in the PH), major companies who do not really or cannot really turn the lights off are widely participating like malls/TV stations etc. It is best that we conserve energy and apply it in everyday life. But there are some who do not observe that and the objective of this event is to educate them and to enlighten them that conserving energy is really important.

I would probably be supporting tomorrow's Earth Hour. I have done it before and we can really save energy with it. I will be praying perhaps or meditate on that time. 1 hour is too short as a sacrifice. Yes, let's do it.

Being one who does not worship the earth and knowing God is in charge I have another take on this. I wold hate to bump into things because of turning off all the lights at the same time. Also what if this backfires, besides more accidents, and maybe finding out after getting rid of the incandescent lights that the others cause mercury poisoning? Remember the global warming scare and now God put us into global cooling? I will of course turn off the lights when I am not in a room, shut off the computer power when I am not using it, and pulling the plug out the wall of the bedroom tv when I am not in the bedroom, but these are not to save the earth but to save me money. Ironically I do not get cash back from putting my newspapers and papers in the recyclable bin.

That's true. This event is done to actually create awareness. Sadly not all people are doing this. So that is the main objective. Only the difference is if this is done globally it would create a great effect. I am also observing energy consumption, yes to save money and to stray away from fire disaster etc. And that is good, in a way we are not aware that we are doing something for the Earth too. Cheers!

We have Earth hour here in Western Australia at 8.30 pm and I will be switching my lights off then for one hour. There is a restaurant here that is doing special meals for Earth hour and will be serving dinner by candlelight. Last time I participated in Earth hour I was packing to go away and I remember trying to get it all done by the light of torch!

That's a great idea. I may join in and do that too. I will have to see what time that is here. I think that whoever started that was very smart! I think we should do it more often. I think some similar things have done but it's a good time to do it right now too!

if we havent started years ago, I think now is the best time. I am not really into participating for the last years, but I am very keen in turning the lights off and unplugging things that I do not use, because I want to save money in terms of bills.

We have this plan in India too. This is for one hour and on one day. In practice if we all took care to reduce our power consumption, everyday of our lives, we will not land into problems in future.

Thanks for the information. I just wish that this schedule has reached the entire nation and make it mandatory if possible. I know it's quite impossible especially for businesses operating at the specified hour but hopefully, those who are able will try to participate. Thank you for reminding us. I'll do this tomorrow and say a prayer as well.

THANK YOU..Good morning, Staria...Great Big HUGZto you for posting this and drawing attention..I truly hope the world joins hands on this hour, and prays for Mother Nature! MARCH 26..what a wonderful birthday present, yes, tomorrow is my birthday, and my son will be home...so we will have double the celebration! From the time my son, was 4 years old, he is now 30, we have observed what we call "Quiet nite"..one night a week! Everything electrical (but the fridge) is turned off...Coal Oil Lamps/gas lanterns for lighting, cooking on the wood stove, and a night filled with Games or reading...and familial interaction! This originally started from incessant power outs, and we learned to enjoy the time with no power, so much...it became a constant celebration, one night of the week! He no longer lives at home...but still observes a night, a week..like this with his lady...and they too, are loving it, as there is NO outside influences in their relationship...they do thing s together. Have a great Earth Hour..and maybe extend it to a EArth Nite!

Good morning, both of you..and truly, THANK YOU! I mentioned the B.D., as it was like an honor that it should happen on my B.day! As long as I can remember, I have made every effort to be a "good steward" of the land...and Nature, as both have been very good for me! Alice...congratulations on participating...and I think, hope..both you and Staria, will find the wonderfulness in a time without electronic gadgets! Reading, reflecting...a good time for a walk with a pet, taking stock of life in general! I, too, live on my own, so love the quietness of this nite. Take care, lovely ladies...and once again, Thank you!

Hi pergammano! You are a really sensitive person! And I enjoy discussions w/ you! :) Anyway, yeah, we and the rest of the people should also enjoy a gadget free life from time to time. Though it can really be hard, but yes reading, reflecting and sometimes it can increase your time w/ your family. And avoid the effects of climate change too in the process! :D

Hey pergammano! Happy birthday to you! :) That's really a great routine for you and your family. And it is nice how your son values this routine and apply it to his own life w/ his partner. This is truly something that we can think about doing at least a nite/week. Thanks a lot for sharing this! :)

The kids have been reminded at school. So even though this once a year event comes in on their spring break, they still remember to remind us. I think the teachers have done a great job in instilling this event onto the kids. It becomes a fun activity for the family. All the while teach the kids of saving our planet, as it is the only one we got.

Yeah, I think so too. Kids should be aware as early as now. Even if they are still little, they can do great things to preserve our Earth. Kudos to the teachers!

Excellent!!! I agree that we should celebrate it every day, It should be mandatory for every country to turn off lights for may be even 10 minutes everyday. UN should make a points system for every country and any country not abiding by such and other conventions should have the points deducted and her voting credits should be reduced that way. regards

I will be very happy to participate in the earth hour this year. I have been participating in earth hour since 3 years now. This year, the earth hour will be even more special because it'll be a symbol of hope and integrity to those nations who have lost a great deal because of natural disaster. I certainly hope billions of people will participate tomorrow! God Bless!

If everyone of us will only be responsible enough then this will be a greater world to live in...The future generation is at stake if we can't correct our wrong doings today. A little effort will mean a lot.
