Why Are Gas Prices So High?

America imports around 70% of its oil. Brazil imports 0% of its oil. President Obama just promised to loan Brazil money to become even more self sufficient as well as promised to be their best customer. Yet won't allow our country to develope its own oil reserves. Obama has done this on purpose, make no mistake: http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/04/import_brazils_oil_policy_not.html Columnist Victor Davis Hanson explains: "Apparently the common denominator here is a deductive view that high energy prices will force Americans to emulate European centrally planned and state-run transportation. That conclusion is not wild conspiracy theory, but simply the logical manifestation of many of the Obama administration's earlier campaign promises." Obama's not the first American president to hinder America's quest for self sufficiency. But during his presidency gas has doubled in price. The silence of the press on this is amazing. No one questions the motives of this man? He cites enviornmental concerns to halt developement of our reserves. But the supposed concern for our environment is actually making things worse. If pipelines instead of ships had moved our oil from the fields to the refineries, our shores may not have been covered in oil. Yet, concern for the environment is what put all that oil in those ships. No one mentions that the countries we import from care little for human rights, so perhaps we hope they will care about the enviroment when they drill for their oil? Wouldn't it be easier to oversee the environmental impact if WE were doing the drilling? The oil rig explosion couldn't have happened at a better time for Obama's campaign against domestic oil production. It makes me, and others wonder. If George Soros didn't stand to make billions from his investment in offshore drilling in Brazil, perhaps I wouldn't wonder so much. Let's take a look at ethanol, the government's pet project to become more energy self sufficient. Ethanol as an alternative actually costs more and pollutes more, it takes a lot of energy to produce ethanol. Yet the government continues to subsidize the production of ethanol. Why not spend all that money on developing a more viable way to becomes energy self sufficient? Because of the lobbying efforts of special interests groups, that is why. BigAgra and GreenPeace have a lot of money to throw around Washington. It seems that blaming the oil industry is easier than thinking this through. Of course, big business has become the villian in our quest for socialism. It has become a crime to be rich. Especially if you become rich providing an essential service that people cannot do without. Like gasoline. But are they really at fault for high prices? Demand for oil has been increasing worldwide mostly because of the growth of China's and India's industries. Obama's anti drilling policies have driven down production of domestic crude. Government taxes on every level of production also are a big factor. Taxes raise the price per gallon more than oil company profits so who really should we be angry at for high prices? Oil companies have made record profits because the demand has risen. Their profit margin is around 9 cents per dollar charged at the pump. So they make about 9¢ in profit for every dollar of revenue. That's lower than the 13¢ average of companies in the S&P 500 index. Last but not least, Obama's promise to Brazil to buy their (American subsidized) oil is a crime when our country needs jobs to save a failing economy. Not to mention the money that could be saved if we didn't have to buy our oil from other countries. Not to mention the strategic boost of not being dependent on Arab or Brazilian oil and having to placate the dictators to get it. What do you think?

At this point to me it seems like companies are price gouging. They don't seem to be talking much anymore about any Middle East uprisings now. When was the last time you heard of anything else besides something in Libya once in a while? What about other countries that are supposed to be trying to overthrow their governments? The US doesn't even get oil from Libya. They really need to get on the ball with electric cars or something. I'd definitely buy one. The oil companies are making way too much money so I wouldn't be surprised if they are doing what they can to sabotage people turning to alternative fuel sources.

The oil companies should be doing more to develop alternative sources this is a huge opportunity for them but are they doing anything? They have enough money to turn half the gas stations they own into electric stations. They've known for decades that oil isn't going to last forever.

Why is it the refiners of oil (oil companies) resposibility to do this? They are doing the ethanol thing, which is government subsidized btw...and not really a good alternative in terms of economic impact as I described in the OP. But to say that they should be doing this doesn't address the problem of gas prices at the pump. We do have companies who try to develope alternative energy. GM is right now building electric cars. Which could have been done years ago, but wasn't. My post has to do with the mind set that it is the oil companies fault that gas prices are so high. It isn't. I will give Obama credit here, since the government take over of GM, they've gotten serious about building electric cars. But his loaning money to Brazil to develope their reserves while ours sit unused is foolish at this point in time. Until we have a viable alternative....we need to work with what WE HAVE, not make other countries rich buying their resources. And it is hypocritical to use the excuse of ecological concerns and then turn around and enable other less ecologically concerned countries to pollute.

I agree we do need to develope alternate energy sourses and become less dependent on oil. If only for national security purposes. Did you notice in the OP that oil companies (the refiners of oil into gasoline) only make about 9 cents per dollar on the gas they sell? Compared to what other industries make (about 13 cents on each dollar) that doesn't sound unreasonable to me. The OP states, and you can check out the link I've provided, it is OUR GOVERNMENT's taxes that make it cost so much. As I understand it, any upheaval in the mid east effects prices as well. But that is not the fault of the refineries in America. Cost per barrel at the sources goes up. They don't control that, OPEC does..and that is the Saudi's doing.

Thanks for providing this intelligent, factual discussion. At this point in time, gasoline prices are far higher than they need to be, and Obama is to blame. Obama does not have one policy that would tend to lower gas prices. Rather obama wants gasoline expensive so people are more willing to pursue alternative energy options (which barely exist, if at all). Once again, obama openly promotes other countries at the expense of the US. He should be tarred and feathered with extra hot tar (so there are more carbon emissions).

And chicken feathers so all would know his true character! It is nice to pick on our president as he is all you say he is, in my opinion. BUT our energy policies are the fault of many years of mistaken policy and law, the fault of both parties. (one reason I think they're all in it together)The past administrations just used lies and deceit to cover it up. Obama feels he's above suspicion and reproach and cares not if we like it or not. This bothers me too...could that mean the noose is already so tight he feels we cannot escape the end of it all? All I know, we need to do something fast, if it is not to late already. The greatness of America is about to be a note in the history books the winners always write.

That's certainly a bone headed and destructive way to force the country to go green. I wish he could live for a month like the people in Louisiana who have lost so many jobs and suffered so much. Of course, I doubt that it would help--he'd probably just invent another program to waste money while little of it helps the people. We can't drill yet he gives Cuba a permit for the Gulf. The man is insane. Combined with his hatred of America, he is also dangerous. I also fail to see how it helps the environment to buy oil from foreign sources. All it does it make us poorer. Of course, that's apparently his aim. He is doing a great job of destroying the country and I can't understand why we're putting up with it.

Do you really think his motive is to save the environment? To 'force' us to go green? Do you think past presidents who hindered our development of our oil reserves really cared about going green? Do the lifestyles of any of these men who make decisions that force us into the 'green' mold, live a conservationist life style? Do as I say, not as I do is more what I hear from them. He is dangerous, and we better wake up to that. Hopefully we have. But are we to divided to get anything done about it? It will take much courage from the conservatives, and much trust from a population that is at best, leary of trusting their leaders.

We are be able to drill oil, and develop our gasoline system, and we can supply ourselves gasoline. But why we rather import oil from other countries, instead of our natural resources? It might be a simple act. Use or exhaust other people's oil first, then we can supply our own.

I never thought of it like that. Use theirs up, then we have ours left. But somehow, I don't think he's that clever. I think if he has his way, we'll be in the dark ages and unable to muster the courage to stand up and save ourselves. Consider this, if we keep buying from the Islamic countries, and they make good on their promises to destroy us...perhaps then Islam will own OUR reserves as well as theirs? Something to think about.
