What is INCEPTION all about?

I finally had a copy of Leo De Caprio's movie entitled INCEPTION. My elder daughter watched it last night and was ecstatic about the whole package. And she prodded me to watch it before I do the more important tasks. Of course, I did not. It was when I was resting late this afternoon that she put it on so I could view it. And I dozed into mini catnaps while viewing... From my dream state, I gathered that the protagonist, Cobb, had an idea that he could penetrate and inject a thought in someone's mind. And he could also extricate what is in the mind and introduce a virtual reality while in a dream. But his idea failed because in the process of making this work, he lost his wife. Subsequently, he couldn't even go back to his kids.... Did I understand it right? I won't be a spoiler and won't tell what happened, in case there are people here who would like to enjoy this movie. The SFX is superb and exciting. But I am more interested in the theme. What do you think is the moral of the story?

Inception is all about a new technology through which we can get into someone's dream. But what is the benefit of it. That if we are an enemy of a person in real then we can be a very close friend in his dream. and we can know his/her secret to get into his/her dream.

The technology part is not clear to me. I understand that a sedative is required for the sleep.

It's a sci-fi world. In that world, people can enter dreams within a given time period. That's why they need a sedative, to control the amount of time they sleep. Of course, you can't enter another person's dream without their permission. That's why they had to trick Robert Fischer Jr into sleeping in the plane with them. Inception is a really awesome film, even if I'm not that much of a fan of sci-fi. It was amazingly done and deserved its Oscar award. If there's anything still unclear to you, just let me know.

I think Inception was pretty original. But I totally understand your preference for realistic movies. There's too much hype with sci-fi blockbuster films. :p

thats about rite..what u summarized theyre bunch of expert in INcepting new ideas to someones mind..it usually a walk in the park..but in the last mission..something came up..and Cobb character has to go deeper to level 3 of the dream world..which were regarded as Point of no return..to some ..at least.. New breed of action adventure from CHristopher Nolan..

The point of no return is real. I do hope though that movie makers do not exploit this for entertainment purposes. I like action packed movies but I like happy endings, too. INCEPTION was surreal!

LIMITLESS was a great movie, I love suspense thrillers, I also loved INCEPTION which was a adventurous movie about the levels of sleep and they also touch a little on hypnosis. basically, it about how one idea can change ones future, and manipulating one subconscious. Can either have a good outcome or a bad outcome, but it's only due to how we as humans perceives things.(real or not real).

Apart from being further ticked off by "Je Ne Regrette Rien" (the "Kick" theme-see my other discussion mentioning this!) I think This Movie is wide open to interpretation..Was EVERYTHING in it a dream? does the little spinning top fall?

It seemed to me the kick was an external trigger to let the guys in the dream scenario know a change in the dream state was about to happen..so somebody had to have timed or set it up..

That kick is questionable. It lies in the subconscious. The characters need to be conscious in order to will a kick...... but them I might be wrong.

You got the concept of Inception spot on. I was a good movie but I did not like it that much to be honest, everyone else seems to love it but I just cant put my finger on it as to why I did not enjoy it. The effects were great, great cast and story. I think it was a great concept but just poorly executed. I think if there is a moral, at least for Dicaprio's character that loss can haunt you in dreams and I am sure we can all identify with that.

Yes I agree, I also read that all the parts that had Cobb's Father in law. [played by Michael Caine were reality, so it left me a little confused about the spinning top in the end as he is in that scene. I do tend to like movies like this that get people talking, especially over and open ending.

That could be the pervading image... that loss can haunt you in dreams ...and the haunting lasts a lifetime...

To be honest, it's quite hard to explain. Inception is like, A dream within a dream within a dream. But I am quite amazed that you got the gist of the story even while taking naps. And you can't call this movie a crap, just because you can't keep up with the story's highly intellectual pace. When my parents watched this movie in the cinema, the audience did a standing ovation, which— by the way— rarely happens. Going back to the topic, I don't want to be a sappy spoiler but to make things short, Inception is that awkward moment when you wake up from a dream but not really because you realize you're still in it. Good night everyone!, maybe we'll meet tonight, washed up on the shores of our subconscious :)

Standing ovation ... ha ha... I am waking up to a new world. But I have always considered Leo de Caprio a real good character actor. He deserves a standing ovation.

If you don't watch Anime, heck, even if you do, this movie will confuse you. There really is no moral to the story, just a lot of questions. When I watched this movie for the first time, I was asking myself, "What did I just watch?" It's dreams, within dreams, that's all it is.

Yup. The producers led us to a lot of crap, I think. Sorry Leo!

Hi eileen, having watched it in bits and pieces you haven't got the story of Inception right.I will not reveal the story, it is best that you watch it carefully paying attention all the time. It is a fantastic movie that is complicated at times if you lose your grip on the story..I am planning to watch it again , because I feel that I will be able to understand it better and also will be able to grasp all the finer details !

That's all right kiran, my daughter is the sci-fi aficionado. I'd settle for a more realistic movie... At my age, the only mind boggler my grey cells can accept is this internet.

That you have to wake up to reality and not to lose yourself in your own dream. It can stand for anything. Like not to lose yourself in the pursuit of money or love. It really depends on your own interpretation.

If you ask me i would say Inception is THE MIND BLASTING MOVIE OF THE CENTURY! Man i never thought that even something like that would ever be possible before. But it seems that Leonardo Caprio pulled it of. It about what the mind can do and the potential of the mind to do great things. I loved that movie. For people who see the movie for the first time nothing anyone will understand. because the story is to hard to remember and mostly too awesome to digest. there's just no end to it. It's about extracting information from the mind. No secrets can be there within the mind. But you would need to see it a few times before you can really understand the concept! Cheers!

ravi, you really liked INCEPTION, huh! That would de Caprio smile. But mind blasting movies are not for me. Sci fi are too unrealistic for my senses... But I promised to watch this Inception again, might make some of my inactive grey cells moving.

I didn't watch that movie though it's highly recommended by my family and friends. While at the same time, it's highly critized for it being too complicated, so i decide to skip it. If i'm not able to understand something for the first time, i will make sure i keep watching to find out more. HOwever i don't have the luxury of time now, so i won't watch it.

yes, and the story also revolves around the pain of losing his wife.. how did he lose is wife? that is an underlying question of this movie which stays on the sidelines of the other story, CObb's task of helping a company to plant an idea in someone's mind.

"And I dozed into mini catnaps while viewing..." haha! I often do the same :P After all the hype surrounding the movie, I too watched it, but I couldn't understand it at all. It captured my attention (during dozing) but it remained a mystery to me right to the end. I should stick to Toy Story 3 I think

Me, too! It's Woody, anytime. I'd bury Cobb in the deep recesses of my mind and will never to extricate him as long as I live!

I do not know the moral of the story and don't think there is one. That being said I did love the movie and it left me questioning something I noticed towards the end. The Idea of his kids being in the picture was at the end when he went into the house and put the top/spinner on the table and spun it but you never saw it stop. The first was when the started a dream session there was someone who hooked them up, whether it was him or another person. Now at the point when they were all on the plane (towards the end) they showed someone hooking them up after the one guy (I cannot remember his name) was a sleep. When they got to the destination, I saw no one unplug them from their sleep. The second was that even after they were in the terminal, getting their luggage nobody acknowledged anyone, even if it was a head nod. This leads me to believe there will be a part two and I personally feel that the dream state had just begun, even though they show the top/spinner (but never showed it stopping) on the table at the end.

That spinning top was a teaser for a sequel, huh! And probably it also implies that the wife could be resurrected, for that is her signet, isn't it? I would like to offer a moral, if the producers will allow me. The story simply tells us that no matter how deep we entangle our lives with, it is possible to come back...Others failed to come back because they were mesmerized by the illusions of life. Too bad... But take it from Fisher's father who said that he would have been disappointed if his son followed him through!

Right. But the only matter for this movie that to understand this movie you need a sci-fi mind. otherwise no need to watch. By the way there is some emotions also. so a very good combination of emotion and science in this move we can see. By the way if linardo is there so the movie is fantastic.

I liked Inception, it's a good film, tells you about have advance technology can go and the disadvantages it can lead to. Great film to watch, the idea is simple go to someone's dream take there secret or implant an idea, they do it for corporate espionage....
