Were people always so self serving?

I think to an extent they were, but not to the extent that they are today. It is just a byproduct of a changing world. People are struggling and a lot of them are dealing with struggles in a way that might not be the best. Therefore they don't care how many toes that they step on and how many people they shove down. Granted, partly simple human nature, but its insane how selfish people can be. Then again its not surprising when you think about it but rather disappointing.

Ah the good old days when people were so very nice to each other. Except when they weren't. If you think about the abuses exercised in the past, I think you might find that people are no more self-serving now then they were, when they can get away with it. That's what's really changed. Now, people can get away with it a lot more. If you look back a hundred years, people needed to be part of a community to survive, especially in rural areas. Now, they can be more self-sufficient (relatively speaking). We are more isolated and transient than we used to be. Thus the mores that once governed small areas are constantly shifting as new people come in and old people go out. When people don't know what the rules are anymore, they tend to fall back on instinct. One of the greatest instincts is self-preservation which can easily be self-serving. Another major change is that communication has grown by leaps and bounds. It's strange that in a world where we've become more isolated from one another, we've also lost a large quantity of our privacy. People are blogging, posting videos on YouTube, everywhere you look, you're given a peeping Tom's eye view into other people's lives. By nature, humans are judgmental. When you allow them unprecedented access into other people's lives, they become more so with some very cruel results. So, in answer to your question, no, we're not more self-serving than before. More of us are freer to act on the self-serving aspects of ourselves than we did in the past.

Yes, that's pretty much the direction I was thinking. It just seems a bit more obvious. There are far more avenues to go down, for a person to embrace their self serving nature. It is simple human instinct, to preserve ourselves. Now it does seem like we don't need to rely on others, so why should we not run them over? It leads to other people thinking that way. In the end, the time we are living it, it seems so. The good old days, always do look so good, because we don't have to deal with them right now. So little we do learn. I think it might be slightly more so than it was, but it does seem to be much greater. If nothing, it is rather more obvious and it is easier for it to stick out in our mind. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

The sad thing about this mentality is that we're not more self-sufficient. We rely on electricity which involves scores of people to produce. We don't grow our own food or collect our own water, that is done by other scores of people. In a lot of ways, we are more dependent than we've ever been. However, we have the illusion that we're autonomous. We live in our little universes, untouched by the people who are integral to our survival, and vice versa. That's what makes our skewed sense of entitlement so sad. In losing the tangible community structure that used to sustain us, we're caught up in an illusion. How it will work out, who can say? However, if more people realized just how inter-connected they actually were, there might be less selfishness out there.

There are so many types of people. Not to mention out of those types are people, there are many different classes among those types of people. Variety is in fact the spice of light and there is a lot of insanity in this world. Therefore, we are going to deal with many, many, interesting things in the world. Self serving is not bad all of the time, but there are times where it can be taken to its most unfortunate extreme. In the end, every behavior is not really completely cut and dry a lot of the time. It is just one of those things that a lot of the time, the really dark side does stand out a lot more. The lighter side of it, it really is not anything that we would bat an eyelash at. It does not just stick in our minds and our memories a great deal of the time. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Its basically human nature. We all have natural tendency to think about ourselves first, this is maybe all part of being alive, the will to survive and protect ourselves and then others.

It fear that you're correct. Humans are rather flawed creatures a lot of the time when you all break it down. Therefore, we are going to have this instinct a lot of the time. However, when we really have to deal with a lot of these instincts and hopefully best manage them. The self serving behavior, we are going to need to put ourselves first a lot of the time. However, it is really not the best to put ourselves first all of the time. We are going to really pick and choose wisely when these self serving behaviors can be exercised as natural behaviors. And when they are what most people would consider to be self serving. Human nature can be a rather ugly thing and it can bring out the worst in us. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I find the younger generation self centered and self serving. I think that it is very disappointing. I for one would not step on anyones toes to get ahead instead I would let them go first. I think that most parents are failing to teach their children what life is truly about. Children nowadays are given toooooo much and have way to much time to do as they please. No religion. All this to me equals self centered and self serving. We have always had those people to deal with but now it is worse. Just my opinion.

I really do fear what future generations are going to be like. Then again, if you talk to generations past, they would say a lot of the same things about everything in our generation and the generations before them would say the same thing about them. Still its not looking too promising with what this particular generation is looking like right now. I do hope that it is an exception, I really do. Then again, thankfully not everyone is like this but it does seem like that those who act in such a manner, do stick out. You hardly notice when people do things in the way that, I don't want to say should be, but how about in a way that is not completely insane. Its just one of the things that is happening with the world today. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

That is the way society is becoming. It is terrible because sometimes it is dangerous to not be like this. Now days if you see someone broke down on side of the road, it can be dangerous to ask if they need help. I wish humans were more decent, but in reality it is hard to find decent people these days.

It is really a shame to say the very least. And things are going to get worse if anything. I really do wish things will get better. There are just many people out there that might have hoped, but there is so much of a negative environment one can take around them, before they begin to see a few frustrations and irritation. Sadly, it really does seem a lot of that can in fact warp a person and twist them to what is normally associated with society. I do wish for a few more decent people. Not to say there aren't decent people in this world. However, it does seem like the people who are more self serving are those who really are sticking out, because it was contrary to the environment that I wish I had. Sadly in the end it is expected. It is really not disappointing, but it is expected. Thanks for response. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.
