Hi myLotters, yesterday I was reading the newspaper and I found a stunning article about iOS4, the new OS that runs on both iPhones and iPads. Looks like Apple has installed a component (a .db file, the experts say) which not only monitors where you are in every istant of your life (latitude, longitude and time), but also sends this info to Apple. This happens not only when you're using particular applications or when you're calling someone; in fact, as soon as the phone is switched on, it will start to transmit data about your position to Apple. The engineers who found out this also discovered that when the iPhone/iPad is connected to a Macintosh, it automatically downloads every info it has collected into the computer, from where it can be sent to Cupertino. Apple has declined to release any comments about this, nor has it explained how our data will be used. So, I'd like to hear your opinions. Who believes this discovery and who doesn't? I think it's true. Are you worried, do you care about this, or is it irrelevant? Meanwhile, however, Apple has reached a new record in selling iPhones and iPads. I still think they make great stuff, even though I disagree with many choices Apple has made lately. How about you? Share your opinions, I'm curious to read them!

This is an old discussion so I guess you didn't know that the this was already scrubbed out in the latest iOS update. Also, Apple said that although the information downloads to the computer every time it syncs to iTunes, there is really no provision for it to be sent to Cupertino, as you say. No, Apple is not gathering data through its iOS, although Telecom companies (in any country, mind you) has the capability to do so. I'd rather that we become cautious of them rather than of Apple.

Thank you for that info, it's good to hear from someone who really knows what's going on. I'm a great fan of Apple, so I was kinda disappointed when I found out about this little issue... I'm glad to hear this has been fixed, and you're probably right about Telecom as well.

If you don't like your device tracking you, you can jailbreak and download a program to stop it from doing that.

Really? I didn't know that. Could you be more specific, please? I don't have an iPhone, so it's not a problem for me, but I'm quite curious to know which programs might prevent such a behaviour, and I think others could be interested as well... Thank you for your reply!
