Why do people add numbers at the end of their names?

This is a question that has bugged me for some time. On the internet, why on earth do people (some on this site too) add a bunch of numbers at the end of their name? It seems stupid, pointless and annoying.

The reason why people add numbers at the end of their names because the name alone did not accept by the system. I also did the same, if you noticed my username the 98 is my birthday.

I knew it was something like that, but you see how it could be confusing. I know from your other discussions that you couldn't possibly be 13.

stupid, pointless and annoying?. I don't think so, for me it looks great, unpredictable and mysterious. When someone put a number at the end of their names, it could be for some reason and noone will ever know the meaning of those number without they told you.

It's because your name's gonna be unique, imagine how many people uses internet? MILLIONS of us are using it and for sure somewhere around the globe, you may have the same name, and in order for your username to be unique, people add NUMBERS before or after their names. :) Like what "SpikeTheLobster" said.

When one registers the site owners suggest to add those numbers as they say that, that name is already taken. We have no other alternative if we want to keep our name. Otherwise we will have to opt for strange names which one may not have even heard of before!!!

Well... Exactly as others have said-they wanted to be Beastspirit (on a mmorpg), but it was taken, so they put a few numbers somewhere (usually at the end)-Beastspirit4. However, on WoW (World of Warcraft), numbers aren't allowed in the names, but ´,`,^,¨s are, so their names become: Nàzgul, Hyíera, Hübert, Kâtalan (for example)...

it is maybe because if they use there name only some one used it already so they add a number some also , they do it for fun or for designing . i do it also sometimes

Usually because the name they want has already been taken. If you're called "John", there's already a couple of hundred others who've taken the name... add a bunch of numbers at the end and it's accepted. Sometimes, it's people creating multiple identities to spam their content and attempt to get more money in return. Oh, I'm such a cynic. :)

Those who put the year of their birth will always regret it later! 786 tells everyone that you are Muslim. 007 says you have grandiose ideas... Yes, I agree - stupid and pointless, but not annoying. It serves as a pointer to avoid these mindless people. Makes it much easier to spot the kids too.
