what does a ac compressor do for a car

my ac compressor is out in my car i just want to know what does it do and how come it cost so much to repair it ?

It's part of the air conditioning system. It compresses freon gas (which heats up the freon). As the gas depressurises, it sucks heat out of the air, thus cooling it - that air is pumped round into the car and gives you goose bumps.
At least, I think that's how it works.
