GFW means the Great firewall of china,it is a well-know part of the chinese government's censorship of the internet .this from wikipedia
Well,as a chinese,I can't visit to google.com ,con't visit to youtube,facebook,twitter.and other good website.in the last few months,GFW become effective more an more. when I input some website,This webpage will warning:This webpage is not available! most of people think about it is reason of the website,howerer,they hear not of GFW yet !
I'm afraid that google mail will forbid !what should I do?
I don't want LAN! I want internet! can you help me ,my friend?

IT is different between Internet and television .You have rights only receive from TV .As for the internet.People can get the initiative from it.Do You heard of any about Tunisia coup? It was due to network guidance.So our government is very afraid that someday the same situation will happen again in our country!

I know there is a difference, I was just making a point, The internet is far more radical than anything you would see on TV maybe that seems to be the problem. It is a sad situation indeed. I doubt if I would survive in China very long but I would love to visit

A lot of countries use such a firewall to control what their people see. It's sad they don't value freedom of speak. They should realize somehow the imformation will get in. People do not like their information censored. Open free communications will make the world a much better place. One day it might make war obsolete.

The government often deceive people in our country.They can be closed networks in anytime Any time at any place .and they can say excuse is justified.
Have you heard of anything about Xinjiang(A province of our country) broken network events in 2009? The government cut off all the network which to abroad other country .The whole xinjiang is just a LAN.You can't make an international long distance call.You can't send E-mail.You can't send text messages by your phone.Many people even rode the train to other provinces just want to go into the Internet.

Blocking one site is not difficult, but it is impossible to build a perfect firewall when thousands of proxies and hundreds of VPN are available through the Internet. Except if China decides to cut completely the access to the Internet, you have not to fear about any firewall.

I don'y have that problem because I don't come from China though I'am from Asia also. I first heard about that when a friend of mine went to china for a vacation. I was worried because she didn't contact me from Facebook. For a week we were not able to contact each other. When she returned home she told me about GFW, if thats what you call it. She said she can't use foreign social networks and can't open some sites that we usually open here in our country she also told me that the Chinese has their own social network. For me I think the Chinese government has their own reasons for blocking these sites but I think they should also give the people the freedom to choose whether they would like to access these sites that are not from them.

I'm admire to that you can choose your would like to any sites anytime.
In fact ,The reason of GFW is the Chinese government want we can't know something ,such as the son of our president and he is corrupt seriously! thay have much riches in other country. 10% government official has 99% riches in our country! However,most of people do not have any Truth about this.Our president appears in the television channel everyday.they just want illusion .this proves that the president is cheat. people can not say anything about corruption...
I am not sure if this phenomenon is exacerbate .We have no right to choose .we just obey them.

Yes,the most popular over GFW is VPN(Virtual Private Network) and SSH(Secure Shell),howevery,the government spare no effort to forbid this tool. you can't seach or buy anything about this in the taobao(the best trade website of china).
