ever wonder how PH is going to defend itself from foreign powers?

i came across a news regarding china's "bullying" the other countries over the spratly islands. we could almost always hear that china is flexing its military power over its claim to the disputed islands. just recently, it was reported that they were allegedly harassing ph vessels, and they are (allegedly) even flying through our restricted airspace. there is a signed treaty by all territories concerned. but apparently, china is confident enough of their military to disregard this agreement. so what could ph do? file a diplomatic protest? which got me thinking. if worse comes to worst, how would PH defend itself should any foreign power provoke us? now that nokor is seen strengthening ties with china. this is probably the reason why PH doesn't want to let go of the visiting forces: to take advantage of their presence to keep china from further provocation. of course, with the help of UN too. of course, this is far-fetched. and i hope nothing serious will happen. but it just makes me wonder how would PH survive a foreign aggression. it is in my limited opinion that our armed forces would not be that armed enough. what can you say about this?

Hello murkie, I am a bit concern on how our military forces could handle such scenario if in case such event will take place. It is not that I don't believe in our military forces and soldiers, in fact I believe in their capabilities and patriotism. Filipinos are ridiculously strong and smart. It is the government that I am not very happy about. I am expecting more from our officials to do something about the armed forces. To give them full battled gear or whatever you call it, because for that we are hearing on the news, some officials use their funds (armed forces funds) for their own luxury. The soldiers are getting less in terms of benefits and they don't even have the complete tools to protect us from invaders. Having the right equipment to protect are country is being neglected by the authority. It is just very saddening.

corruption extends to all government agencies, i guess. sad to say that instead of spending it on soldiers' welfare, the funds were transferred to their pabaon. there was even an allegation that top officials are having secret deals with rebels and terrorists. talk about moro-moro.

Oh yes. I've heard about the "deals" and the "pabaon" system. I can't imagine it really. Those soldiers whose salary/income are so low, whose willing to offer their lives to defend our nation are getting less to nothing while their officials (the bad ones) are getting richer and richer...

there is war when there is greed.. yes, the situation in PH is really bad, but i still believe that there is hope for our country. GREAT nationalism is what lacking in us, as we can observe that even in little ways like when we buy goods, most Filipinos do prefer imported products, and as we can see, China is leading in production, for they can produce more at a lesser wage for the workers, China now has Economic power not just in our country but throughout the world, that is why i also think that they are really serious in putting up stronger army, for if a country has international military power, they will have more chances of getting the support of other country for their own economic and political advantage.. but first thing first, every Filipino should have a deeper sense of nationalism in order for us to have one goal and one mind, all for the benefit of every Filipino..

To be honest, I think PHL do not have the capability to fend off foreign military aggression. It can only rely at present on strengthening ties with other countries, in the hope that they will help in case of an attack. On the other hand, if you remove corruption in the government and military and took good care of the weapons and welfare of our troops, they can surely resist foreign attack to some extent. But the best way for the PHL to defend itself against foreign attacks is to arm itself with nuclear weapons, and to ensure that this will not fall into the wrong hands. Any country will think twice before attacking PHL, on the fear of nuclear winter. North Korea learned that only too well. Despite some serious political and military issues they committed, even the US can't touch them.

too bad our country is afraid to build one of her own, much less for a nuke power plant. i agree with your view of nokor, though.

i think we won't even move an inch and our military, navy and all would have been impaled in the battle. funds are not used properly, people are not as trained as they ought to be, their officials have corrupted the money that is supposed to have been put in its proper funding...

sad to think that the government is putting national and civil defense as one of their least priorities.

I don't think we'll be able to defend ourselves if a foreign power decides to invade us. I guess we'll just have to rely on our allies. I also believe that the US would not allow this if it indeed happens since we are allied to them. Plus they also benefit from us so why would they let other countries invade us?

that's what the UN is for, not only the US. even some other country would serve as an intermediary in case a dispute arises between two nations.

For sure we wont stand a chance militarily if in case a war erupts between us and China. That is, if we fight alone. But if we join an alliance with United States and other Asian countries and be active diplomatically then China will think twice before they launch any attacks because if they do then our allies will come to our aide and help defend our country from foreign aggression. This is why we need the VFA agreement with USA because frankly, they are the only country right now that is willing to shed blood for us if such scenario happened. The leftist militants are very angry against them when USS Carl Vinson replenished, yet when an armada of Chinese warships arrived a few weeks back, and when Chinese ships harassed Filipino surveyors in Spratlys...These same leftist militants are as tame as lambs. We already know the true motives of these treacherous communists so we must not harbor any feeling that they really love the country.

i don't think the leftist groups are in any way philosophical, or that they are standing for something. i always thought that they are only after fame, i.e. that they are standing against something that people would talk about.

Despite their hate of China 'going the capitalist way', leftist militants share some ideological affinity with China (remember Marxist-Leninist-Mao Zedong Thought?), and are very much in favor of totalitarian rule under the guise of 'people's dictatorship/national democracy', well, at least until Deng Xiaoping came into the picture, so I guess their reaction is pretty much expected.
