Amaya - the first historical epic series on TV

Tomorrow (May 30) will be the start of an epic series on GMA 7 called Amaya. Frankly, I am excited to watch this new show as everything looks authentic and impressive. The battle scenes look epic, and the previews say they even hired historians to ensure everything is accurate including the outfits, weapons, way of life and the way they speak. It will also benefit the Filipino people to see and for most discover for the first time their real heritage before the damn foreign invaders almost wiped out our culture. Almost forgotten Filipino words like binukot, babaylan, rajah and others will be used throughout the episodes.

For me the idea is good and worth taking note --- revisiting the ages that was most forgotten by our countrymen, the age of rajahs and datus. However, I doubt the storyline. It's the same storyline they served before ---- a baby separated from parents, struggles to have identity, fell in love with two different men of different social class. You got what I mean? The idea of putting an epic to life is good, it can make Korean telenovelas showcasing their history a run for their money IF ONLY GMA DID NOT COME UP WITH A RECYCLED STORYLINE.

Sadly, GMA 7 doesn't have a stable of good writers.

I have to agree. They couldn't come up with fresh ideas. Tsk.

I dont think the story center around the love triangle between Marian's character and that of the two men. The main storyline revolves around Amaya's tragic life of losing her parents, of a royalty becoming a slave and the struggle of her people form overcoming the oppression brought about by the greed and thirst for power by a cruel rajah and her scheming and ambitious stepmother. There's also an interesting substory about a jealous and equally rotten stepsister, and another stepsister who can be good or evil but her character is still mysterious. So I guess we should not assume that this is just a rehash of old soap operas but is a new kind of show that could be the start of similar quality works that will benefit our culture and people's awareness of their country's root in the long run. I do hope other TV channels like ABS-CBN and TV5 will come up with their own concepts and not just threw mud which doesnt do the industry any good results.

Good luck to GMA7's "Amaya" a Filipino cultural historical epic series on primetime television. This is another great milestone for GMA7 who made great original primetime series like Encantadia and Mulawin. Making this kind of production are really very hard tasks, they have to dig in very deep and research so hard. So every Filipino like us are really proud and honor to our very own heritage.

yep! thanks. Avisala LetranKnights25 To be a writer on these kind of productions are really so hard to conceptualized. Well, of course there will be some situations that can be easily detected and tagged as copied materials. But I don't mind that, as long it is intelligently and smart choice for the writer to put that on the scene. The truth really is we can not compete with those kinds of Koreans epics like "Jumong", "Jewel in the Palace", "Queen Seon Dok" and others. Because of the Spaniards conquistadors swept away our ancestors heritage, cultures and traditions. Before those time Koreans and other Asian countries like China, Japan, India and others are already on advance state of civilizations for more than a thousand years. The Philippines are like those tribes or people found on some small islands on the center of Pacific like those Polynesians group of Islands.

I strongly agree there gjbaigar, the show in Mulawin and Encantadia shows the true innovative ideas from GMA when it comes to intertwined it with our culture. though there are some that are too obvious to be a copy cat but they are improving i must say.. i hope can make some tele novela about our history in world wars with the foreign occupiers.

I agree, as a writer, that is hard to conceptualized a original (emphasis here since the program is getting under fire in that respect) program. I kinda understand what these writers are going trough since I am in the media industry. It's hard to get a story approved before a network or a 'creative committee' with too much pressure and too expectation. Now, it's riding on a high hype and the program have to deliver. I think that you can blame the networks and the 'creative committees' aside from our lack our pride in our history and culture. History left us with a uncertain national identity and it haunts us this very day and perhaps in the future. There is a wide gap and a lack of historical-based programmes in the country. I don't blame the networks. They probably think it's not marketable enough and the costs can be staggering if you want to be as close to history as possible. After all and at the end of the day, it all boils down in the balance sheet. we can never be Koreans and have their histiry and culture, and maybe we should just aspire what is the best for us, both in TV and the culture thing.

Hello GreenPeace, It's about TIME actually! almost every single Novel series were nothing more than foreign imitations with a taste of filipino culture. this is a good thing that we have a FULL PACKAGE and part of our own history for some reason. but the story of Encantadia was still epic for me, not to mention it has it's own Time paradoxial stories. but this new series would be education to children in our generation. if ABS competes with it, then it would be a great competition but also a good chance for the little ones to learn our history Have a nice day

I love this tv series- I have been watching it since day 1. It's really good- can't wait for Amaya to appear with her snake. I love the supporting cast too. I hope it won't be so long though, since it may become boring.

Likewise, I am excited about this show of GMA. I just hope everything will turn as it is promised. I am glad that some people are not researching before making a drama about our heritage and tradition. I hope what happen to Machete,(The use of ethnic background was very raw and not well-researched) won't be repeated here...pls, people are VERY TIRED AND BORED for another juicy love story and it surely spoil the reader's interest.

I hope the hype will live up to its name. there has been many shows who only have an enormous amount of hype but does not have the substance in all areas concerned. Another hope would be that the people behind this will stay authentic and respectful toward history; television has a notorious reputation regarding historical accuracy. As for the culture tidbit, we did have a culture before the foreigners but perhaps the foreigners had a good job of making and impressing our culture as inferior to theirs so much that we still have national identity issues up to this day.

Well, it may or may not be successful. The teaser is pretty interesting, so does other good trailers that came out and then went plunging down as the show went on. It all depends on how they will keep the public "hooked" to this series. Yes it is about our own heritage and yes it is very educational, but will it entertain the viewing public? I've seen Marian Rivera move (fight) in one of her movies and to be honest, I don't think she's worth watching.

Lately, I haven't been watching shows in our local networks except for the news so that's why I'm not familiar with this upcoming show on GMA 7. I hope the producers had indeed done justice to the show's historical accuracy. A lot of Filipino viewers might watch this and would eventually base their knowledge on parts of our history on this show. That's how influential TV is to most of us.

I am excited abut this too, I even watched "the making" last Sunday. The costumes look great and the cast too. I hope the story is good and exciting like Encantadia. We can learn many things about our culture at that time too.

This is a unique series from GMA7, epic series indeed. This reminds me of my elementary days studying the ancient Filipino culture at the time before the Spanish reign. This is interesting since it is based from history, our history as a matter of fact.

I hope they will have an earlier timeslot for this show so that the children could watch it. It is a good show where they could learn Philippine culture and history. On this modern world where children had no interest on reading our history, it is great that GMA 7 had come up with this kind of show. And they are really serious in giving accurate information because they had consulted the experts and made a thorough research in every aspect. I'm sure it will be successful.
