i listened to the music following the link. it was unfamiliar to me. i am more familiar with some kundiman songs often played on variety shows before. of course pilita corrales has been very famous for decades. when i was a kid, there used to be a re-run of a show by armida siguion-reyna. the title eludes me right now. but the show showcases filipino kundiman and talents. singers are in the traditional garb. i used to have a glimpse of it back when my grandfather was alive. but it made me sleepy when listening to the show. hehe no offense meant. kids nowadays, just like albert mentioned (above), are likely to be in the opm genre of music. kundiman is lost in the mainstream because it simply is not the type of music most people nowadays listen to. maybe there are radio programs still playing our old songs, but so far i haven't heard for a long while now. maybe because more people are glued on tv and computers. last year, i had to help my 9-year old nephew in their filipino assignment to research on kundiman song and explain in his own words the lyrics of the song. he had difficulty understanding some of the tagalog words on his own. he's more used to speaking in english rather than in our own local tongue. but he put in a great effort. hehe that is, i have to translate it in english first for him to be able to understand it in filipino. lol

dear myles, That's one problem with our kids for this era, they don't know much about our language. I also face same situation with my daughter whenever she has projects in Filipino and Music. She don't understand most of the words...it really makes me sad. I am happy that she is fluent in English at young age,but i am not happy that she is not familiar with our own language. Our country is not aware that our culture is dying- so sad, really sad. Around Asia, our country is one of the country who is likely to be of western and sooner there will be more trace of our very own identity but only the name Philippines. Even wedding bells becomes foreign

yeah kids of this generation are far more advanced in the english language than in our own local tongue. my nephew speaks about 95% english at home. which is good at some point, but i wouldn't want our own language to disappear just like that. hahaha how do we say it in filipino... wedding is kasal, kasalan, or pag-iisang dibdib. bells is kampana, batingaw, kampanilya. kampana ng pag-iisang dibdib? batingaw ng kasal o batingaw ng kasalan?

If that kundiman is sang by Pilita Corales I would love listening it. I still know her song entitled USAHAY because I used to sing that song when I was a kid. I usually hear a lola in the neighborhood singing that song with emotion. And I learned the tune nad lyrics from her.

I could say that I am a big fan of the Kundiman and other Filipiniana music. It sounds kind of weird for some teenager like me who should be getting crazy over Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars, etc... I have been in to the oldies music for quite a while already but I've gotten hooked with the Kundiman for less than two years now. I think it's now a part of my system already; listening to our traditional music has become a habit, which couldn't be broken anymore. :) I am a fan of Ric Manrique, Jr., Celeste Legaspi, Mabuhay Singers, and the music of their contemporaries. I listen to this weekly radio show on DWBR 104.3 FM, "Harana ng Puso" where the current Mabuhay Singers sing the traditional music. I have also subscribed to several YouTube channels that upload the related music, and one of these is still consistently uploading his collection of the Kundimans, Philclassic is the name of the channel. He also has a Facebook profile, Philclassic Filipiniana Archive, wherein he updates his uploads, as well. :)

hello ana, Sorry for my late response. It's nice to know that there are still people especially the youngsters who appreciate the Kundiman/old native songs. Some youngsters are engrossed with western music and the latest trend which sometimes is just noise and not music anymore. I use to watch the Kundiman in one tv station thru HBO-but sad its already gone. Thanks and have a great day

Yes,it's sad that most of our very own traditional songs are dying..:xx Sometimes we can blame our government for this. Our education system- slowly they are eliminating all info that recalls our ethnicity.

It's quite disappointing sometimes to see that most people of my age are much attached to the music of this generation. I know there's nothing new with that, but what's more disturbing is that they seem to be oblivious with the our traditional music, unless they become exposed to it in their music lessons at school. Fortunately, I have met some friends who turn out to be fans of Kundiman, as well. At least they are a proof that there is still hope for us when it comes to keeping the culture of our music intact. :)

Back in college, we have an art session which deals with the appreciation for modern and historical art, and Kundiman was one of the subject matter that was discussed. People nowadays, should considered appreciating and knowing their cultural roots, such songs have been in the history of Philippine music and should be valued because of their nicely done music art pieces which has a strong story behind the song and not just put merely producing music for the sake of money or popularity. Although sad bad true, such songs are only valued when they are commemorated such as Buwan ng Wika wherein in school institutions, they play and perform Philippine music.

hello blogger, It's very sad that most of our youngsters doesn't know our Kundiman anymore. Some youths even laugh when you ask them to listen to our cultural songs. Even at school, it's very sad to see how students appreciate the new genre (songs) and totally forgotten our very own Kundiman. Thanks and have a great day

True, they don't value our genuine ethnicity because they are hooked by what it "fad" and what is modern in our entertainment culture, they pretty much go over "pop" rather than cultural roots. Thanks for your response.

I'm sure a lot of kids do not have any idea about kundiman anymore. Even those who are in their 20s do not know about it especially since it's been a long time since Armida Siguion-Reyna's kundiman show was put off the air. The last time I san a kundiman (I'm only 32 years old, mind you) was when I competed for a choir contest. We sang a kundiman called "Lambingan". I miss singing these songs...

Uh oh... I'm afraid I don't know much about these Kundiman songs... In fact, I had to look it up to find out just what songs are considered Kundiman... I think the only one that's familiar to me is (the famous) Dahil Sa Yo. But aside from that, I don't think I know any other. Lol! (P.S. I'm so happy to find out that I can use these cute, round, yellow things now! )

that was really sad.."Armida's AAWITAN KITA" is not running for years already. I've been trying to search for the program since i changed our cable company- but couldn't find it anymore. I wish that some tv station will come up with this program,"Kundiman and Folk dances" Our very own identity is dying and fading right before our eyes (+_+)

You know what, I just had a thought. The problem I think is lack of exposure to the old songs. They are rarely played anywhere now, right? (Does Armida's show Aawitan Kita still exist?) So how can the younger generation know about them at all. Unless maybe they listen to some AM radio station on some late night or something... If only the popular shows, particularly on tv, can devote a segment to these old songs. (Surely they can think of something creative to make it appealing to the younger ones.) Maybe just one song a day, or even just one song a week! Then they can help keep these old songs from dying out and remaining only in the memories of older generations...

For me, the best time to listen to kundiman is early morning upon waking up and as you prepare to go to work. The songs make you feel happyand ready to face challenges of work.I once stayed in an aunt's house. Her landlord placed an old record/album to a round player. It wada nostalgic piece.I guess there are no more big, round rotating plates like that

The vinyl records? I am very much pleased to tell you that there are still quite a lot of existing vinyl records up to this very moment. In fact, there are videos of them existing in YouTube. Most usually, the Filipino records are uploaded by a certain Philclassic ( www.youtube.com/user/philclassic ). And I have also seen some of these vinyl records in several antique stores and thrift shops, as well. There are also still the turntables being used and even selled around. USB turntables, as well! I could only hope that they would still remain existent in the years and decades to come, despite all the modernization and technology that takes place now. Better yet, I hope that these technologies could help maintain the genuineness of these earlier apparatus.

It has been ages since I listened to our kundiman songs. But I still know what they are. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the younger generations when all they know are Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift songs. My 5 year old can very well carry a tune, although I really can't understand what he is saying. I still sing to him songs that I used to sing when I was young like the "Bahay Kubo" and "Leron, Leron Sinta.
