first haircut

Good morning myLot! Yesterday was my son's first haircut... at 18 months! What took me so long before deciding to cut his hair? Well the husband works on a ship and the last time he came home, our baby boy was barely three months. He arrived last week and our little boy is already one and a half year old. In the Philippines, most parents cut their baby's hair for the first time when they turn one. Unfortunately, the hubby was away when our boy had his first birthday and it was only last week when he came home again. So my baby got his first haircut only yesterday and surprisingly, he wasn't afraid of the barber nor with the scissors and he almost behaved well the entire time his hair was being cut. He was bribed only with a lollipop. His hair was almost shoulder-length then and many thought he was a girl. Now nobody will make a mistake anymore. How about you, what's your experience with your baby's first haircut?

I hope he looks prettier than before and I like that.

Oh he does, but I miss doing him small braids or ponytails.

I don't have kids yet, but I find your story very exciting. It a good thing that he was not afraid of the barber or the pair of scissors. I just means that he is a tough boy. :)

He was tough right but the barber I think didn't have an easy time cutting his hair. For the first part, my husband was holding the baby and he was moving a lot though he didn't cry. Then I got to hold him until the haircut was finished because he wanted me to carry him.

I don't have kids but I love long hair on boys. If I ever have a boy I would not cut his hair. I'd wait until he wanted to have it cut himself. Then I would probably cry because I wouldn't want him to cut it but I'd leave the decision up to him. When my father was a boy he had long hair. His mother put his hair in two braids and he used to hate when the neighborhood girls would play with his hair. My aunt still has his braids after they cut them. I love seeing men with long hair so I wouldn't want to cut it.

Yep, I didn't want to cut his hair too but the daddy wants it clean cut... I already miss doing a ponytail with my boy's hair. He had natural curls. :)

I dont' have kids, yet. But I would like to share a famous myth about this "first haircut". Old folks say that if you want your child to become smart/intelligent - allow only smart/intelligent persons whom you know to do the first trim.

I didn't know of that myth. However, my husband took a small portion of my boy's hair and put it between the pages of a dictionary. It's also a myth that is suppose to make the boy intelligent. It actually made me giggle seeing my husband doing that. Thanks for the response.

I've never heard of that tradition, but it's really interesting. I'll have to research it later. It's great that you waited for your husband to come back home and did it as a family. I don't have children, but I use to hate getting my hair cut as a child and even a tween. I still dread it sometimes because I'm growing mine out and I'm terrified that someone will make the mistake of cutting too much off (it's happened twice before).

I wanted him to see how long the hair grew while he was away. :D I don't know the origin of the tradition but folks here in our place would always advice young parents to have their baby's first haircut at age one.

my daughter is only 3 months old, and doesnt have much hair so it'll probably be awhile before she gets her first haircut, but i have planty of niece and nephews and i know it was hard for there moms when they got there hair cut for the first time, my sister just recently got her sons haircut for the first time and he wa only 8 months old and it was past his ears on the sides, she didnt want to get his hair cut but people where always calling his a girl also, not something a mother wants to hear about her son.

I have two boys. And both also had their first haircut when they were about 1 year old. My eldest had no problem getting his first haircut. He's already 10 now, but he's been shying away from barbers these days. He wants to get his hair long. My second cried the whole time getting his first haircut. He had to sit on my lap while he had his cut. It wasn't until he was about 3 that he started feeling a little better about the buzzing sound when it gets to his hair.

It was a struggle to have my son's first haircut. We had to restrain him so the barber can have a good cut. He was so strong, that almost 3 people held him. The next hair cuts were done by me while he was pre-occupied playing. I would snap his hair unknowingly while he would play, and when he turns his head I would hide the scissors. Good thing, he was able to go to a barbershop without crying anymore whenever he saw his father go to one. It becomes a bonding time for both of them.

My daughter had her first ever haircut at 3 years old! It's true! You see, my daughter was born bald. It took some time for her hair to show on her head. And when they did, it kinda stuck close to her scalp...so she appeared bald still from afar. They saw that's how it really is when a baby has curly hair. And even though her hair was growing longer through the years, it didn't look that way...because it was curly. Plus, everyone was fond of her curls and were advising us not to cut it yet. I actually wrote about it on my blog. Here is the link: http://mymommyconfessions.blogspot.com/2011/06/happy-3rd-birthday-maia.html
