Mushy Fruit

United States

I am so angry right now! I spent $2 on a canteloupe last night at the grocery store. I cut it open today and cut it up and peeled it. I took a bite and wanted to cry when I discovered it was mushy with an almost sour taste! The outside of the canteloupe didn't indicate this at all. It felt rather firm, and was still slightly green! It is almost as if it's been frozen! I'm frustrated because I had been looking forward to several slices of sweet melon and now I have nothing. The worst part is that I also bought some grapes and they aren't good either. What is wrong with the fruit? Has anyone else noticed at their stores that the fruit quality is not as good as it once was?

What a letdown! I hate it when that happens! Here in Australia fruit is very expensive at the moment especially bananas so I appreciate your frustration at the fruit being spoiled. I would take it back to the store if for nothing else but to make them aware of the condition of some of the fruit they are selling.

Well the fruit here is getting more and more expensive. I wanted some grapes the other day when we were in the store and they were $2.79 a pound! I love grapes, but I'm not paying that price! It seems like highway robbery to me! Especially when you can go across the street to another store and find them for 88 cents a pound. You wonder...is that really a great sale price or is the other store jacking up the price? I tend to think it's probably the latter.

We have gotten some good fruit lately. I do not know where they got the cantaloupe from, but I had good ones the last two weeks. Purchased at Dillons/Kroger stores. Georgia peaches purchased at Wal Mart were small, but sweet and juicy, and only 98 cents per pound. I would be taking back that cantaloupe and grapes to my stores. I know it is disappointing to be ready for something great and get mush.

We got this one at Fry's which is also a Kroger's affiliate. I think I will stick to those that we can get at the farmer's market. I heard about one from our neighbor that is open every Tues, Wed and Thursday down by the courthouse that is only twenty minutes from my house

We only have Farmer's Market on Saturday. I will probably check them out as well. I am so anxious for tomatoes and peppers that I grow myself.

I miss my grandfather during the summer months. He always had a huge garden and would share each time we would go over to see them. He'd ask when we got there if we needed some potatoes or would I cook some purple hull peas if he gave me some (DUH) lol My favorite was his corn on the cob. I don't know what he did, but it was always huge plump ears and he grew "mixed" ears of white and yellow sweet corn. It had the best flavor

Can you save a piece of the fruit, with the rind etc. in a container, and take it back to the store tomorrow morning? Maybe take a plastic spoon, so they can taste it for themselves. Does it have a sticker on it or something, to show when you bought it? do you still have your store receipt?

I still have the store recipt and it's in the refrigerator now in a plastic ziplock back. I have every intention of taking it back. Husband just walked in the door from work and needs to run up and get some more milk anyway because I didn't realize yesterday how close we were to being out. I hate when I do things like that! lol

Yes, I have noticed. I am thinking of trying to go to the local Farmer's Market to make sure I get fresh fruit. On their website I saw they even show you how to tell how far the fruit was grown from there. Like within 30 miles or 100 miles. While Walmart's fruit has gone dowhill, I went into Sam's Club once with my dad, as he is a member. Their fruit is fantastic. I've gotten to where I'll ask him to get some fruit for me and then ask to pay him back for it. Because although it's the same company, the fruit at Sam's Club is a lot fresher than the fruit at Walmart Supercenter.

I've noticed that too...and many times it's much cheaper! My niece got some grapes at Costco last week that were really good. I just couldn't seem to stop eating them because they were SOOO sweet and delicious.

Well, we have a few big grocery stores local, but about a block away, we have a farmer's market. I wonder if it is better to buy it more directly from the farmers, when they're in season. That's probably it, the fruit might just not be in season over there, and the long import it traveled, in the heat, probably did a number on it.

You may be right. I haven't gotten white grapes that tasted really good and sweet in months. This is the 2nd canteloupe that wasn't very good, although the last one I bought was better than this one. I do think I need to find a Farmer's Market here. I had a really good one where we used to live, but haven't found one here yet.

When I lived in Arkansas, there was a family farm that was on the way home from when I was taking college classes. I would stop several times a week and get something fresh to cook or serve for dinner. They grew the best zucchini squash, and it was all organic.

Many of the commercial varieties of fruit are hybridized to travel well and tolerate cold storage and lots of handling. Therefore they are not always the sweetest. I have heard this about canteloupe in particular. Now I have been getting the absolute sweetest pineapple at the stores lately, and I really am enjoying them.
