Poodle - Royal poodle
Canada
June 16, 2011 4:19pm CST
The people living 3 houses down from us had a large poodle. Whenever we would go for a walk with our dog and they were outside, their dog would start to jump and run around. He's 7 months old and very much alive like all puppies. They seem to think that he will never calm down. They said they tried just about anything but he is still too hyped up. Last week, they were out and they had another little dog. (not sure what breed) They said they brought back their poodle in exchange for this one. I wouldnt be able to send my dog back. He's part of the family and no matter if he's not perfect, he's still MY dog. Would you be able to send back your dog because of some trait you dont like?

Hello MagicalBubbles, People like your neighbors should not be alowed to own a dog. How could they "buy back" (!!!) a dog? What was he? A washing mashine that didn't iron the clothes? Of course he was jumping and running around, he was only a puppy! I wonder why people don't try to understand what does owning a puppy mean before bringing home a dog. They should know what to expect from a 7 months old puppy. And now what? Will they also buy back the new dog? Because there is no dog without "fault".

Hello Inu, I feel the same, Im wondering if they arent going to send the new puppy back also!! They shouldnt have a dog, they shouldnt have any pets at all because they think that pets are like statues that you can leave in a corner and they wont move!! I feel sad and angry with them. I dont think I will ever be able to speak to them again. I dont see these people the same way I did previously. How could they do such a thing. You're right, they shouldnt own a dog at all. Thanks for sharing!

Well the people at the shelter here arent the smartest people around. They should have asked the right questions the first time. They didnt. They should have again the second time and still they didnt!! Ive been there once and it didnt feel right. The people working there dont seem to like animals at all. My dog kept growling at the owner and he never does that. My dog loves people and he didnt love him.....so that tells me a lot. Before you ask, no I didnt get my dog there. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder how did the employees from the shelter give them another dog. Don't they think there is a chance for the little one to go through the same sad experience like the happy poodle? I feel so sorry for the dogs that are abandoned because their former families can't understand they are dogs, not puppets. I think everybody should pass a test or something to be sure they know what to expect from a puppy.

I worked for the RSPCA for a while and you'd be horrified to hear some of the reasons people give for returning their animals. One that sticks in my head is a rabbit who was brought back to a centre because it "didn't greet us at the door when we come home like we want it to". Some people need to be eaten by animals, not allowed to keep them.

That is awful !!! HE didnt greet them at the door.......scuuuze meee!! You're right, some people shouldnt be allowed to have animals and should be eaten by them!! Sometimes Im ashamed to be part of the "human" race!! It must have been heart breaking to work there. Thanks for sharing!

Given some of the abuse I've seen, I think some people just have no clue. They're human, so they're superior. Stupid.

I would understand little children thinking that a wabbit will greet him at the door or talk or even be trained to act like a human .....but ADULTS??? Whats wrong with our world.....Does it mean that now they should teach this in school or have special classes for stupid adults?

I have returned dogs, especially when my children were very young. One was a Lab puppy who was just to much for my toddler another was a beagle who constantly dug up the yard. These dogs were returned to breeder as they were pure bred. I also gave away a spanial to a friend who needed a hunting dog and a great dane to a man with a large ranch who wanted that big a dog. I was at fault for the misfit of these dogs and was very gald to find them good homes.

Tsk Tsk to you Savypat but at least you know you were at fault and not the dogs. At least you managed to find them good homes!! Good for you. I have a black Labrador and everybody says that they will chew just about anything......oh sure he tried when he was a puppy but I kept after him, watching him and every time he didnt chew.....id give him a treat and now he wont chew on anything thats not HIS toys!! Of course, all that takes time and patience....lots and lots and lots of patience LOL Thanks for sharing.......Im curious....I do believe you have a dog now, dont you?

We had a lot of trouble with our dog till she sobered down and that took months but we went through it all knowing that it will all be over.Yes. It is over and now she is a perfect lady. I will never do what your neighbour did. The pet grows on us and no matter how difficult it is to manage them when they are at a stage where their energy is at its peak our love bears it all.

She is adorable and useful too. I can happily be around my chores as she alerts me should there be any movement in the compound. Her sleeping time, besides ofcourse she does that during the day too, is around 9 and it is a scene really how she comes up and pushes my hand off the keyboard if I am there more than a moment beyond 9. She wants me around while she hits the 'pillow' and talking about pillow yes she does have one.

Yes love bears it all and you and me and everybody who replied already wouldnt send them back. We love them, they are part of our family, they are our babies!! OF course a puppy is more "alive" thats normal. You and me and everybody here know that.....how come they didnt!! They're stupid, thats why! Thanks for sharing and glad you're really enjoying your dog now. He must be a happy one to have you as a parent!

Oh how sad and they did not give the puppy a chance. My thought would be that it would be my responsibility to assure the puppy got training. There would be no way I could return a puppy back after having it a few days, it would be like a child, and we do not return them. Or at least that is how I would feel about it. If it were that they could not have one and or unable to care for it but to exchange it, gee that is quite sad. Poor puppy.

@ HWG: It IS really sad and I know the shelter where they sent the dog and I wouldnt even want my dog anywhere near the people working there . I had to leave my dog at the vet to have him neutered and I didnt sleep all night, wondering how he was doing, all alone in a cage in a hospital. I kept calling to make sure everything was alright and he was just a puppy then. I couldnt have sent him back no matter what and he was my FIRST dog. Oh sure its demanding and you have to be patient but if you teach them right, with positive reinforcement, they are so happy to learn. My neighbor is a jerk.....I told hubby to not let our dog go near him. If you can send a dog back after 7 months....Id be afraid to have him as a father. All he had to do was to take the time with some treats and the dog would have listened. I was so sad when I learned he had sent him back. Poor dog. He was surrounded by a family with kids and now he must be all alone in a cage at the shelter. Im asking every body I know if they wouldnt take him as a pet. I might just find him a home........a GOOD ONE! @ Besthope....you're 100% right....they ARE our kids and all dogs can be taught manners with patience and love and treats!! Thanks both for sharing !!

Well worded HWG! They are like our kids. And when our kids makes mess, we dont exchange them right, but I wonder how people buy pets and send them back. Pets need more love, care and above all patience. I simply love dogs, they are more faithful and thankful than human as well. There is a famous saying "Kids after they grow up, they will leave parents and start independent life. But dogs will be under your legs till their end! No one can match to their faithfulness."

Hi besthope! That was exactly my thought too, about comparing the situation as if it were a child. We cannot exchange children, but how easily one can exchange a pet. Goes to show that some pet owners when they buy a puppy for instance are not thinking of the entire responsibility. There is no guarantee a puppy or a child will be a perfect one, yet how easily one can exchange a puppy. Too sad to think that I would be so excited about bringing my new puppy home and then return the puppy, oh just too sad.

That's horrible! I could never give my dog away. I couldn't even give my moms annoying chihuahuas away. I think that's kind of like animal abuse. They could have had him fixed or something, maybe even tried to train him a little. My dog is part poodle and he's an excellent learner (or that might be the schnauzer in him). I don't like the fact that he chews on my shoes and doesn't stop, regardless of how many time outs in the kennel or spankings he gets. I still love him nonetheless.

Im guessing he's chewing on your shoes to get attention. You might want to try to give him a treat when he's NOT chewing. They say its best to use positive reinforcement. Good luck!

No, when I commit to a pet, it is my pet, my friend, and my responsibility. I do not go around getting animals and then getting rid of them.

I feel the same. IF I decide to have a pet, its my responsibility and its up to me the "human" to find a way to teach that dog how to behave. Thanks for sharing!

Maybe if I have an over-aggressive dog that bites people, yes. Otherwise, I would not have the heart to get rid of a living thing just because of it's too cheerful. Honestly, I am not that fond of dogs, enough that I would want them as pets. Not yet, anyway. But I do not think I would be callous enough to get rid of one who is too happy and replace it with one who is less happy.

You may not have a dog right now but by the sound of it, Im sure you would take the time to train him properly with positive reinforcement and treats. Dogs love you unconditionally. The dog I have now is my first dog. I wish I had had one way before now. He managed to change me and make me a better person. When the time comes for you, you'll know. If not, its ok. Thanks for sharing!

Oh no MagicalBubbles, I would never do that. I have two, one is 2 years old now but highly notorious and active. My neighbour use to say sell him back to shop. I was really angry, he is not simply a dog, he is one of my kid like. And no matter how he is, I would never do that. I missed this fellow doggie when they were on a week to grandpa's home. I can't think a day without my pets especially my dog! Poodle is so cute..dogs are really adorable, only we will know the importance of them much better than those who don't like them.

My baby - Miky with some of his toys
You and me and everybody who replied to this discussion or who will reply wouldnt do such a thing because our dogs are our kids, part of our family. Some people have no brain and no heart. My Labrador acted like a crazy puppy until he was 6 yrs old. He's been a little quiet only the past year lol. I keep thinking there must be something wrong if he doesnt run all over the place or jump on me.....the vet says he's fine and only getting older. Ok if you say so I say haha!! I thought he was a lot to handle when he was a puppy but the thought of sending him back NEVER even crossed my mind. I decided to have a dog and I will learn how to train him the proper way with positive reinforcement and will love him. The last part wasnt hard....he's so cute!! Im sure your dogs are adorable also. Too bad you didnt post a picture so I could see them. It isnt too late for you to post one as Im posting one of my baby.

I wish their parents changed them for a turtle when they were little babies and they were peeing in their pants. Once you got a dog it should be yours for life. No dog should be exposed to such change in his life. Dogs suffer so much when their families abandon them! I would never do such thing to my dog.

Haha, thats a good one, change them for turtles!! You're right about that poor dog who was such a happy dog....it might break him or even kill him to be back in a tiny cage in a shelter. I hate them for what they did. What kind of a lesson are they teaching their kids? Thanks for sharing and I know you'd never be able to do such a thing.

Hi,MagicalBubbles. May be they think the poodle is too noisy that it will infect neighbours' lifes,so they send it away. But by the way,I like my puppies very much,I will be very sad if I have to send them away.

HI Minmin, No he wasnt barking, he was too active for them. He was just a puppy and Im sure he would have calmed down eventually if they took the time to train him. Im the same, I could not get rid of my dog, no matter what!! He's my baby and part of my family. Thanks for sharing and I hope you never EVER have to get rid of your puppies!

Wow, that's really horrible of them to do that. All puppies are excited and hyper, if there's a puppy that doesn't act like that, chances are there's something wrong. I couldn't ever get rid of my dogs for anything. My one dog used to be a little hyper as a puppy, but I dealt with it and now that she's older she's calm. I don't think it's right to take a dog back because there's something you don't like about it. Just think, it's not like you can return your baby if there's something you don't like about it.

Yup, they sure have lost a family member. I wonder what they would do if their kids couldnt be controlled anymore!! I still feel so sad for that poor dog being sent to a shelter. He was a good dog but he was just a puppy...damn them!!
