Everybody's sick!

First it was my daughter. She had a cold, and was not in the mood to eat anything. And then it suddenly disappeared the following day. But it seemed that before the virus can exit our household, it fell on me. Luckily, it too left me the day after. Then my daughter's nanny developed not just a cold, but also some coughing. And just like what happened to my daughter and I, her condition didn't prosper. When it seemed that everything was going great again, my mother-in-law, husband, and I began having some slight food poisoning from the crabs my mother-in-law bought from the market. We all know that the crabs were the culprit, because our daughter and her nanny didn't eat the crabs and so didn't manifest any symptoms. We were all going to and from the bathroom and, soon enough, my husband and mother-in-law became dehydrated. I was handling everything pretty well, which was surprising because I'm such a weakling! Fortunately, my mother-in-law became better the following day. Hubby, on the other hand, now has an all-out flu. He didn't report for work yesterday. And even if he is not 100% okay, he still went to work today. Poor guy. And then today...for some strange reason, my stomach flu came back. The whole day today, I was either asleep or inside the bathroom. I had to take something for the bowel movements and another thing for my dehydration. My daughter's colds are back again. She also has some rashes on her left eye lid. The nanny's cold also came back. Aaaarrrgh! When will the madness end?! If all this persists by tomorrow, we're all going to the doctor.

Oh, how unlucky your whole household are. Imagine, getting food poisoned by the crab. It's a good thing it's not that serious. But as to the flu, i think it's what is prevalent nowadays. Some of the my officemates at the accounting department, were stricken by it last week. And so with their household too, according to them . Luckily, i didn't catch the virus, to hink that they are in front of me. I think when one in the household is down with colds and cough, it will contaminate the others too, specially if their immune system is weak too.

Given the same circumstance, i would also eat those crabs also. I guess, your visitors have ensured that they will be giving fresh ones, so there's realy no need to worry, because this time, they are really fresh. Yummy! Crabs and prawns are our favorites at the house too. Specially, my daughter when she's with us for a vacation from her studies, she would really eat them with so much gusto!

They're just expensive, aren't they? But because they're really good and yummy, you just won't mind the price. :D

I know! They were really bad crabs, apparently. But you know what? The incident didn't stop us from eating crabs again just yesterday. I know, I know...I never learn! But let me explain first. The father of my brother-in-law's fiance came for a visit yesterday and brought crabs and prawns fresh from the lakes where they live. Fortunately for us, we never experienced any bad side-effects this time around. My hubby, since he is still kind of traumatized by the whole thing last weekend, decided not to partake of the feast. Poor guy! :(

Hi! That's terrible! Did you already go to the doctor? Maybe your daughter has some allergy of some sort since she developed rashes? And how did you all eat the crabs? I mean, did you buy the crab fresh and cooked it? Or did you buy the crabs already cooked and then ate it? I haven't heard of crab poisoning. All I know is that it can cause allergy. I myself don't eat crabs because I'm highly allergic to eat. I don't get rashes though. I sneeze a lot, my eyes get itchy and in worst cases, my eyes swell and I get difficulty in breathing. Anyway, I hope you have gone to the doctor by now. Get well soon to all of you.

So it was food poisoning from the crab? Maybe your daughter is allergic to chicken. It's really one of those foods that can cause allergy. I don't eat chicken actually because it can give me allergies.
• Philippines
12 Jul 11
Food poisoning from the crab, yes. My daughter and her nanny didn't get food poisoning because they didn't eat the crabs. My daughter first had colds, and then got her allergies because of the chicken again. I thought she outgrew it already. I guess we won't be eating chicken for quite a long time here in the house then. :)

My mother-in-law bought the crabs from the church-sponsored bazaar we visited after hearing mass. They were already cooked. And since they didn't smell or anything, we just ate them like that with rice. She didn't steam or heat them again. I'm pretty sure it's that. But we didn't make my daughter nor her yaya eat the crabs so I guess their's was due to a virus. As to my daughter's rashes, they're gone now after I applied topical steroids on them (as prescribed by her doctor). She ate chicken that time. I will continue to observe her. Thank you for the concern my friend!

You really need to get some disinfectant spray and spray the whole house really good so to kill all the germs or at least most of them. Spray the bed sheets, door knobs, anything that's touched on a daily basis. If you have a dishwasher, use it because the heat from the water will kill all the germs. Our old family doctor told that to my mom when my brother kept getting strep throat and they went to the store and bought a brand new one and it worked! My brother didn't get strep throat no where near as often as he did because of the dishwasher. I have lupus so it's very easy for me to get sick so when the flu season is about, I have to stay home and let hubby do all the running around and then has to be sprayed down with a disinfectant so he doesn't bring the germs in the house and get me sick however, we didn't know there was a stomach virus going around and well, I got sick for about a week but the first day was the worst. Now my mother has pnenomia and is really sick. I've been taking care of her for the past week and will continue to till she's well again. So you're not alone in this, it's something going around and will continue till the germ is killed. Good luck! You're going to need it!

Everything is okay now with us. The only person who is sick is my husband. His simple cold, turned into phlegmy cough, and now he has a throat infection. But he is now taking antibiotics. I do intend to do as you advised. The minute my hubby is better, I plan to disinfect everything, every nook and corner and surface, vacuum everything that can be vacuumed, change very bedding, etc. I didn't know you have lupus. I'm sorry to hear that. YOU take care okay? And don't stress yourself out please. I will pray for both you and your mother. Godspeed!

Hi miadsoriano, Awh I am sorry to hear that all of you are not feeling well. It certainly is a family illness as the virus continually spreads back and forth. Too sad when that happens as, you being the mommy there is no time for you to rest off you cold as I am sure you are taking care of all others and not able to nurse you own cold. Yes good idea if all are still not feeling well, a visit to the doctor would be good as this way maybe an antibiotic may do wonders for all of you. Take care and hope all of you start feeling better soon.

Hello my friend. I'm so touched by your show f concern for my and my family's health. I have slightly good news. I say "good" my daughter, my mother-in-law, our yaya, and I are all well now. I say "slight" because my hubby is still under the weather. But fortunately he is now taking antibiotics for his dry cough and throat infection, which should clear out all bacteria still lingering in his system. :)

I really appreciate your concern my friend! Things are okay for all of us, except for my hubby right now. But the good thing is that he is now in antibiotics, so I'm hoping he will start to feel more himself by tomorrow....I hope! :)

It is a good idea to go to the doctor if these symptoms persist, especially if there is a baby around. Viruses can transmit from one person to another. And it is of paramount importance, also that you keep checked of what is causing it. Whether or not these are allergic symptoms, the best way is to consult an expert before the problem gets worse. Especially in cases like these when you wonder too much what is actually causing the problem.

We're all good now. My baby (upon advice from her pediatrician) took an anti-allergy syrup for both her colds and rashes. She's fine now. Her nanny is also about 90% better due to the cold medication administered to her. My mother-in-law, hubby, and I benefited form the rehydration salts we drank, anti-motility medication we took, and bananas we consumed to fight the potassium loss and dehydration. My husband is the only one left who is sick with a cough and throat infection. He is now in antibiotics. Whew! :(

There is a Cold and such going around where I work that is NO Fun. I have been dealing with a cough on and off myself since about the 6th. It seemed like things were getting better, and then about 3 days ago I started coughing worse again. I got some more Cough syrup with codeine in it from my Doctor and if not feeling better by Monday or Tuesday I am supposed to make another apt with my doctor again. I just hope it will not deter my leg wounds getting better with being sick like this.

hello mia, when it is something viral, it gets very contagious hence everybody gets sick before the sickess leaves the home. when one has it, the others can get it though holding of the hands, the air (when the sick sneezes), the door handles of the rooms, and especially the telephone. i am sure, some over the counter remedies are available but if fever persists for 2 to 3 days, i would also suggest that you see a doctor to make sure it isnt something more than a flu. ann

The fever has disappeared...thank goodness!! But you're right about the passing of bacteria in the house. That's why I am planning a general cleaning of the whole house -- starting from changing of the beddings, vacuuming of everything that can be vacuumed, disinfecting every surface and corner. I shall start this project the minute my hubby (who is the only one left who is still sick) is feeling better.

I hope that by now, everybody is OK! It is really like that, specially if you have kids in the house. And when they go to school, they bring whatever virus they pick up from other kids in school, and bring it home. Which usually spreads to everybody.

Oh yes, everybody's fine now. Believe it or not, my husband had to go to another doctor and he was prescribed another round of cough meds and new antibiotics. He took the last of his 14 antibiotic tablets last Sunday.

hello, it is possible that they are different things happening at the same time but in a way related, if I may explain it in layman's term it could be that some of the maladies were viral in nature while the others could be bacterial such as in the case of crabs so causative agents could be entirely different but in a way I would say that it is related because a bacterial infection would make us also susceptible to a viral one and a viral infection would make us susceptible to a bacterial one, now if it happens all at the same time then we have the tendency to generalize that all maladies are happening all at the same time without really understanding the root cause, it's my personal opinion and am no way an authority so it is best to tackle symptoms, illnesses and people involved individually with professional help, anyway I hope you are all fine now friend

I can identify with you here cause when my children were small, one got sick and got hospitalized, and I had to pay like 15 thousand pesos, then the next child I spent about 7 thousand, well I thought it was over, then the first child was sick again and so was my mother!, I fell down to my knees and prayed and asked God what's wrong? I burned kamangyan (a kind of plant) and insenso (incense),to drive away evil spirits and threw salt around the house (somebody told me to do that), miraculously all of them were healed and were all well for a long time, I do not know if my little ritual helped, but it did stop all the illness hahaha
• Philippines
9 Jul 11
Wherever did you get the kamangyan plant and incense? As to the incense, does it have to be a certain kind?
• Philippines
8 Jul 11
Boy, that was some explanation! I never thought of it that way. But I definitely get what you're saying. We're all good now and hubby is taking the necessary medication. But plain and simply, I think what happened to our household was a case of "a series of unfortunate events". Hehehe!

Ohh bhaby, don't you know that sore throat is a sign of infection? Is your sister ok now? Maybe you have to let her check in the clinic to be sure. I am concern about that sore throat. Who knows there is something behind that sore throat. Have a good day!

Thanks for the show of concern. As of today, my daughter, our yaya, my mother-in-law, and myself are all fine. It's my husband who is still sick. The trips to the bathroom have stopped. But his runny nose has now turned into dry cough. He is now taking antiobiotics and has been absent from work for 3 days straight. :(

That sucks but it can happen every now and then. You should probably go to the doctor anyway just to get checked up and what have ya. I remember once the whole school got sick and they had to shut it down because they were worried it was that Bird Flu, but it wasn't. Anyway like 40 people were absent because they were in bed with the flu. Crazy, but it happens!

Oh my...I was having so much "fun" taking care of my daughter, and seeing how my nanny, mother-in-law and husband are all doing! I'm surprised I didn't collapse as I, myself, was also sick that time! You know what I did, rather, what I thought of all that time? I kept reciting this: "Mind over matter, Mia. Mind over matter." I didn't let my sickness get the better of me. I know I should be strong for my family and household. Now the only one I need to take care of now is my husband and make sure he gets better over the weekend. :)

Maybe it's because of the weather, viruses can easily spread if it's rainy season. We should also be careful of what we eat because almost everything is now polluted and contaminated.Even some fruits and vegetables are sprayed with insecticides,it's better to use organic and natural products. The best we can do is to strengthen our immune system by eating fruits rich in vitamin C or taking supplements. We also need to have enough sleep and bring umbrellas when we'll be outside.
• Philippines
9 Jul 11
Yeah, why is that so huh? I noticed that about the rainy season. Great tip about the fruits. I shall take that into consideration when we go to the grocery today. I'll make sure to pick fruits from the organic section to be sure that the ones I get are not only rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, but also free from insecticides, pollutants, and other bacterial contamination.

Hi miadsoriano! I'm so sorry about what happen to your family. You know we can blame the extreme temperatures of your condition today. From too hot temp to sudden pouring of rains. Flu is not so alarming but maybe you should all take vitamin c to prevent flu & colds, and maybe multiple vitamins once in a while to boost your immune system. You know, it is scary to eat crabs nowadays specially if you are not sure where they came from. (Thanks God, that I am allergic to crabs.) You have to clean it and cook thoroughly because you never know where they came from. We can only trust crabs that came from clean fish ponds, but you know lately in Laguna there was fish kill, right? And to tell you, crabs eats decaying fish. That's fact! Better be careful. I suggest you have to go to a clinic to let your stool be checked, just to be sure. Get well soon...
• Philippines
8 Jul 11
I agree with all the points you raised. But I can't dismiss the capacity of a flu (which many people think of as really simple) to become complicated. And it really depends on the person who has contracted the flu. My hubby has a relatively fast heart beat/rate. And whenever he isn't feeling good (a simply cold, cough, or flu), his heart beats faster than usual, which is a cause of concern for his doctor, more so mine. When his heart beat picks up, his blood pressure zooms, and he gets a really bad headache and weakens. So yeah, you can say that a flu is still alarming to me. :) We're taking our regular vitamins...Viamin C, Multivitamins, DHA oil. And then 2 days ago, we bought fresh pineapple juice to boost our ascorbic acid intake. Thank you so much for reminding me about eating crabs this time of year. I completely forgot! P.S. Hubby is now taking antibiotics.
